Author's Review
Madonna's "Vogue"came out circa 1990. Dance music was either dead or it sucked at the time, and Madonna was a breath of fresh air, as usual. Almost two years later, Nirvana and friends trashed Madonna and friends' party, but we shall get to this later.
"Vogue" is a incredibly catchy house-dance song. It's a nod to pop culture, and one of Madonna's greatest song. "Vogue" is also one of the defining Madonna songs, and the black and white masterpiece of the video was ingenious.
The lyrics are about dancing,
Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music [move to the music]
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow [go with the flow]
You know you can do it
Pop culture,
Greta Garbo, and Monroe
Deitrich and DiMaggio
Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean
On the cover of a magazine
Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rogers, dance on air
They had style, they had grace
Rita Hayworth gave good face
Lauren, Katherine, Lana too
Bette Davis, we love you
Ladies with an attitude
Fellows that were in the mood
Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it
Vogue
being free,
It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it
among other things.
All in all, "Vogue" is one of the greatest dance songs of all time, and will be remembered as a song that defined it's time.
