Product Review

Avoid Viking (in spite of its good looks)

by   frwebb ,   Apr 29, 2008

Pros:  Beautiful looks, very hot flame on burners

Cons:  Can't accurately control oven temp, no real simmer, no customer support.

The Bottom Line:  DO NOT buy a Viking range! They're beautiful but defective - oven controls are inaccurate and burners are too hot for simmering. Cooktop hard to clean too.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

We spent almost ten grand to buy our dream range - a 48" Viking with six burners, two ovens, and a grill. We didn't realize it was a clue when the stove arrived with a knob missing. Soon we discovered that the oven controls are defective (both ovens) so that you can't set oven temp reliably. The "play" in the knobs and stems is more than forty degrees - if you try to set 350, you may get 310 or 380. If we weren't burning our dinner, we were undercooking it.

Viking pretended there was nothing wrong with the stove. Our store people were able to see that there definitely was a problem. Then Viking pretended we were the only ones to experience the flaw. Also wrong! We've now met or heard from five other people just here in Northern New England with the same issues.

Also, the gas burners do not turn low enough to simmer without burning.

Bottom line: THE OVEN CONTROLS ARE DEFECTIVE, AND VIKING CAN'T/WON'T FIX THEM. Our store, Pennock Appliance, treated us great and replaced the Viking with an almost identical Wolf range. End of problems! Skip the anguish and inconvenience, just buy Wolf in the first place.
