Author's Review
I have subscribed to Vanity Fair for several years now, and have always enjoyed its content. I must admit, however, that I once considered cancelling my subscription due to its untimely delivery - I would see it in stores long before it ever arrived at my home. However, that problem seems to have been resolved, and recent issues have arrived on time.
There are a LOT of ads in Vanity Fair, but they don't bother me for two reasons: 1) It keeps my subscription rate down to $1 per issue; and 2) They're well done, so they don't look like typical advertisements. In fact, sometimes when I'm truly bored but have already read the magazine I'll just flip through and look at the ads....
There is something for everyone in this magazine, whether you're interested in politics, celebrities, the arts, or cutting-edge exposes; and they're always well-written. The celebrity interviews are not exactly hard-hitting, but they're certainly entertaining. Most interesting, however, are their various exposes; I never fail to be surprised at the content.
Dominick Dunne is a regular contributor, and I have come to be a fan of his various books as well. A Hollywood old-timer, he tells of the golden years of Hollywood in one issue, and discusses the death of his beloved daughter Dominique (the older sister in "Poltergeist", who was murdered by her boyfriend) in another. His articles are always interesting; he seems to have a special knack to get people to reveal their secrets, and it's always fun to read his latest juicy offering.
The photographs are always stunningly done. Whether it's Demi Moore in body paint or simply black-and-white photos of female celebrities' morning rituals, they always catch the eye and the imagination. Further, it is common to find the unusual, whether it be the cast of an old movie reassembled for a nostalgic shot, or people dressed in whimsical costumes.
I plan to continue my subscription for the foreseeable future; after all, it's nice to know that, at least one day a month, I'll open my mailbox and find something I actually look forward to receiving.
