V-Rally registers as the most pitiful racer ever seen
Date of Review: Oct 29, 2000
Unable to get EA's "Need for Speed" approval, publisher Infogrames went and released their version of an old Playstation game on the N64 (NFS V-Rally) trying to make it more enhanced. Sadly, Infogrames and Eden Studios made what we see here the most empty and incompletely unfinished racer ever played on any console. This game has so many downfalls, it's too hard to enjoy this game.
GRAPHICS: F
The developers at Eden Studios appearantly made Infogrames' V-Rally '99 have the grainiest and most travestile graphics ever witnessed in a game before. I usually never give an "F" rating but these visuals made me loose my lunch. Since the developers at Eden Studios seemed to sacrifice everything, we still have a very fast-framerate and speed. Too bad the great framerate can't save this department from meltdown.
SOUND: F
Since there is a distinct absence of music in this game, I automatically wondered why no music was programmed in this game. The only music you'll get a hint of in this game is the dead menu music. The engine sounds are very irritating and the commentator sounds like Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. Usually I say that's a good thing but it's too annoying to say so, and besides it sounds bad anyway. The awful crash noises makes a quiet "bumb" noise, unacceptable and effortless.
CONTROL: F
Squashy controls makes players get the feeling that either the axel is attached to the rear of the car or your car is made of rubber and has been squashed. Meaning the controls are so awful it's hard to make a turn without hitting a wall and automatically spin around and make it unable to turn back around. Argh! The defying physics are a major downfall from attempting to capture realism.
LASTABILITY: F
I sadly can't recommend this travesty to anyone. The game is 4-miles under stellar of those other earlier released games such as the best one to date, the trimuphant 97 rally title, Top Gear Rally. This game won't occupy your attention span for longer than 5 minutes guarenteed. If you prove me wrong, you'd be lying.
FINAL WORDS: I can't make your selection for you yet neither will I tell you what to choose but I highly suggest you not wasting your hard earned money on this junk, it falsly displays N64's true power. I can't recommend this game to anyone however I highly recommend an older game that is better all around, Kemco's Top Gear Rally.
