Author's Review
Having three grand daughters when shopping I have to keep up with the "look" whatever that may be at the time. I like to be the fairy God/grandmother so if there's something a little extravagant I'll buy it for the girls for a special occasion, birthday, Christmas, etc. Thats what Grandmas are for. The girls discovered UGGS recently.
The Uggs are Australian sheepskin boots made to be worn, well, everywhere, any season, judging by what I've seen in the fashion mags and on the kids both South and North. Not just kids, adults as well. Personally, I didn't get a pair myself. I have magnificent apres ski boots that have now been relegated to the closet since I don't ski anymore and spend most of the year in Florida. These were crazy , crazy expensive over a decade ago and I cannot rationalize wearing UGGS in Southern Florida although I see tons of gals wearing them. At my age I don't go for fashion trends so much. Don't get me wrong though, these have no age requirements.
The Uggs come in many wonderful colors, pastels to black and back. and are even available in blue camo. The girls got black for the middle girl and sand for the two others. I do not recommend the sand color, it is much harder to keep clean looking if you're dealing with snow, sleet and ice. The oldest already had a pastel pink pair. For those of you who are practical stick to the darker colors, the light colors show dirt easily.
The UGGS are very comfortable, they have soft fleece inside. The fleece is excellent as a insulator and for cozy comfort. The UGGS are made from the best quality twin faced sheepskin and they are treated on the skin side and the wool side to prevent or repel water. This also allows the boot to breathe and wick up moisture to keep feet dry. Sheepskin is naturally water resistant. UGG advertises that their boots will keep bare feet cool in temperatures as low as -30F to 80. The fleece adjusts to different temperatures. I see gals in Florida in 90 degree weather wearing these with shorts or bathing suits! Because the lining is fleece you need to adjust your foot size to the fleece. The UGGS will "give" so go smaller. The UGGS only come in full sizes so aim for a larger size when buying. They are meant to be worn without socks. They come in tall and short versions. You can wear them pants in or pants out.The soles are ridged PVC.They do not come in wide widths.
Keep in mind they do not come waterproofed you need to waterproof them. UGG makes a waterproofer. Stay away from mud and puddles though, waterproofed or not. These are too expensive to mess up with and they will show it if you don't. They are extremely well made but don't produce miracles. The UGGS seem to adjust temperature wise so that you can go from the nasty , cold weather outside to indoors in a heated home and still be comfortable. The company stands behind them. The one time my daughter in law had trouble with a pair of UGGS they were replaced immediately. These were purchased a at Nordstrom's, a store with fabulous customer service.
They are sold in 24 countries including the US and UK. They come in Kiddie mini (low), tall and Classic and they run about $90. In 2003, UGG was named Footwear News' "Brand of the Year". UGG footwear is warranted for one year against defective materials and workmanship. This does not extend to problems that arise from normal wear and tear. Slight dye transfer may occur with darker colored sheepskin during first few wears according to the site. Lighter colored sheepskin may pick up inks from clothing with which it comes in contact, so be aware. This discoloration is not covered under the manufacturer's limited warranty.
A little history: UGGS are out of Australia originally and then turned up in o California. California Surfers loved them, and the UGGS caught on. The UGGS were acquired by the Deckers Outdoor Corporation in 1995, In 2000 Oprah Winfrey chose UGGS as one of her top favorite things. Everyone in the audience received a pair, wish I"d been there . She chose then again in 2003 and in 2005. That alone put them over the top. You know once Oprah allies herself with a product it usually soars.
UGGS are now available at most stores and on line. Prices vary. You can find them on Ebay new and like new but that sort of sale voids most warranties.
