Product Review

Turok: DE-evolution

by   icarus420 ,   May 14, 2003

Pros:  Once you buy it you wont have to again

Cons:  most of the game

The Bottom Line:  Itty-bitty little guys that run around like oldskool Contra. would likely be good if on another console.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

Turok Evolution begins with a different story. This one begins in 1886 with Tal'Set the leader of a Native American tribe taking on the US Calvary for possession of the land. Before the fighting ensues however Tal'Set and Djunn are both sucked into a wormhole and transported away. Thus the game begins and you can choose either Tal'set or Djunn as your character although honestly I noticed little difference between the two other than appearance.
Hampered by far by the fact that gameboy has been out for YEARS and still doesnt have a properly internally lit screen -- unless you want to shell out for the NEW one of course. Boo on Nintendo for that tech fowl up.
I had great hopes for this game having played some of the Turok games on other platforms but this game isn't really anything like the Turok I've seen and enjoyed before.
Since you can't even see what is going on all you see a small little soldier guy running across what is mostly a boring flat platform type environment spiced up by the occassional ladder to climb, dinosaur to fight or item to pick up. Strictly an 8bit endeavour unless you have a magnifier and a light and even then there is little improvement. The figures are just too small to be fully enjoyable or make the graphics stunning.
Speaking of items the powerups are at best lame but really you have NO chance if you play without them as the onslaught of equally hard to see enemies is constantly outgunning you or in a position on the screen that it is impossible to get to without taking some kind of damage. The gameplay itself is very challenging all on its own, the fact you can't hardly see what you are doing makes it even tougher.
The cinematic cut-scenes were well done and enjoyable as they were actually able to be seen. The controls of the game are simple enough to use, A and B being your shooting and jumping with the usual direction controls plus a weapon wheel making for quick and easy change between regular gun and the found/earned items. Sounds on this game are about average, the music rolling in the background enough to keep the flow going but not enough to intrude on the gunfire, explosions and screams.
I will admit I didnt get too far in this game, as aside from being hard to see and play it was pretty boring. Each time you play a level - and you will play each level over and over as you die - the enemies are pretty much in the same predictable places allowing for little variety.
Those of you hard up for a shooter or hardcore fans of Turok might somehow get your jollies off of this if you have the new gameboy you can actually see on or if you plug it into your gamecube. Otherwise, save yourself the time and get a game better suited to this small screen darkly lit format.
