Author's Review
David wrote something in one of the write-offs that got me thinking. Basically, it made me think that maybe I should be writing more reviews (I had been spacing them out a little too much lately). So David, these reviews are for you ya damn retard lol.
So now that I got that out of the way, I will begin (finally). I was going through my CDs and I came across the album that I had wanted to review for months now. A few days ago I heard that Sheryl Crow was coming out with her new album this year and it made me want to start listening to her again. Tuesday Night Music Club is one of Sheryls best albums to date (seeing as how she only has 3 studio albums, it doesnt say much, but whatever) and a very impressive debut album. I cant say that I love every song on here, but the ones I do enjoy are enough to make me sit through the others. Lately Ms. Crow has been irking me a bit with her countless collaborations with so many artists. I guess shes still trying to be in the spotlight so shes not forgotten, but goodness
she is just popping up everywhere, isnt she?
Tuesday Night Music Club surprised me a bit because I had no idea what to expect. I got it after her Globe Sessions CD had been released, but I didnt know Sheryls music. What I was mostly surprised at was the songs that I actually enjoyed. Sheryl has played a really big part in the types of music that I enjoy
her use of jazz and blues in her songs helped me to appreciate the genres (Shelby Lynne did this too).
Run, Baby, Run is one of my favorite Sheryl Crow songs ever. The beginning just gives me goosebumps because of the way the guitar comes in to join her voice. The jazzy influences in the song appeal to me so much so that I sometimes wish I had the instrumental version of this song. Let me just get this out of the way
I dont always understand Sheryls lyrics. Most of them are symbolic (like the next song) and I just dont get them sometimes lol. Im not a ditz really, I just prefer lyrics that are a little more straight forward. Most of you guys know this already, but Sheryl is an amazing lyricist. I admire that about her :) Leaving Las Vegas is a song that I enjoy because of the instruments used here. It has a very different sound that has kind of a country sound to it. This song can be taken literally where she wants to leave Las Vegas, but it can also be seen as her getting away from gambling her decisions in life all the time. Her voice is a not at its best here, but it actually adds to the song
maybe she sang it this way for a reason.
No One Said It Would Be Easy is such a good song. I love the chorus because I never thought of challenges like this: No one said it would be easy, no one said itd be this hard. I do think the song goes a tad slow at times, but every time she gets to the chorus I cant help but relate to it. What I Can Do For You is a song that I used to love because the music has a great beat to it and Sheryls vocals are great. The lyrics are sung at just the right speed so that the song doesnt get boring. What I recently noticed is that Shelby Lynnes song All Of A Sudden You Disappeared has a similar musical arrangement (if you slow it down a bit and take away the guitar the songs sound a little similar).
All I Wanna Do is a song that pretty much everyone and their mom knows. The album version has a different intro than what my radio station would play and I prefer this version. The song always makes me smile because it is totally a drive around song. I love hearing this song when Im driving anywhere
I turn it up and sing along :) The next song is the song I was very surprised that I liked. We Do What We Can is a very very slow jazz song that just happens to be my favorite song on the album. The music is sad, her vocals are simple and pleasant, and the mood just relaxes the crap out of me. My favorite part in the song happens at 3:47 where she speeds up the tempo and has a steady beat for a few seconds. That is what made me love the song in the first place. I Shall Believe is a wonderfully slow song. My only complaint here would be that she didnt have enough verses and she repeated the title of the song a lot
a little too much really lol.
Songs like Strong Enough, Cant Cry Anymore, and Solidify are not the types of songs that I could listen to just whenever. I have to be in a certain mood to get into these songs. Her song, Superstar, on her self titled album fits into this category. They are midtempo and the music soothes me
not like a ballad, but kind of like how some of Shelbys songs soothe me.
Grade: B+ All in all, Sheryls songs are really relaxing. I know I mentioned Shelby like 50 times in the review, but I just cant help but compare their music (I know I shouldnt do that, but whatever). This album earned Sheryl a few Grammys that year and once you listen to it and appreciate it, youll see why.
