Another Lame Action Movie.....
Date of Review: Nov 4, 2009
The Bottom Line: Not a must-see: predictable, shallow, cheap
I'm a girl and I didn't grow up on Transformers. I was raised on Barney and the Disney classics. So taking in both the fact that I have less background with this story and that I am female might help you understand why I disliked this movie so much.
Going into this movie I was open minded. There are many movies that I never watched the kids TV shows they are based on or read the comics but have come out liking such as Batman or Iron Man. I hear that the movie is better if you've grown up watching the TV show. For me as a Harry Potter fan, I get more excited for the release of the Harry Potter movies and more disappointed when it doesn't line up with my expectations. So I understand the anticipation and expectation in this process. Both the build up and the disappointment were not so extreme in regards to this movie, but I would definitely say my dislike to it was extreme.
I realize this movie is both an action movie and based on a TV show, and so the rules of characters and plot tend to be waived by its audience. Its not meant to be deep or thoughtful, it's just about some cool graphics and girls with hot bods. Some movies do a better job of putting some meaning into their action movies. I am very impressed with the Batman movies. I liked the action, I liked the characters and the plot. I'm not asking for realistic, I'm just asking for gooood.
Transformers was just not up to par. The robots were the only ones that I wanted to stay alive throughout the movie. I had little connection to Shia LaBeof's character in the film. He seemed to be all hormones and no depth. His character was lines in a script, not feelings and not personality. His personality was "I like this girl", "I like cars". Something that really bothered me was his parents. They seemed to be romanticized parents dreamed up by some willfull teenager who doesn't completely understand what the role of a parent is. His parents weren't looking out for their child. They seemed selfish, ignorant, and uncaring. Their sole purpose in the film was to get some laughs out of the audience. But who's really laughing?
Wholesome values are lacking. Depth is ignored. This movie is shallow, based on weak characters, action and violence, vulgarity, and cheap thrills.
I think the only way I would like this movie is subtracting the parents and subtracting Megan Fox. This movie seems targeted to men. I think for many girls like me, there will be no appeal to watch it. This isn't a good wholesome family movie. If I had kids, I wouldn't want them to watch it and I would definitely not recommend it.
