The Bottom Line:
A superb truck. It has grown up and it has Toyota quality throughout.

We were in the market for a Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4WD. We really didn't consider any other truck for 2 reasons: 1) The current state of fuel prices, and 2) I knew the reputation Toyota has earned for quality. I've previously owned 2 Toyota 4WDs, and I loved both of those. We've had the 2006 Tacoma for over a month now, and it is much nicer than my previous trucks, and that's saying something.
EXTERIOR: Styling is subjective, but I really think it looks sharp. The build quality is excellent. I really like the new bed. It's all high-impact plastic and is really rugged. We even have the package that provides an AC outlet in the bed rated for 100W with the engine off and for 400W with the engine idling. The tow package provides a hefty hitch receptacle and is prewired for a trailer.
INTERIOR: The seats are a dream. Comfortable and VERY supportive. Now that the Tacoma has been upped to a mid-size, the rear seats are surprisingly roomy. Tall people can sit front and back in actual comfort. We got the JBL sound system, and it's very nice, especially for a stock stereo. It has an amp and a sub and 6-disc in-dash changer.
PERFORMANCE: The engine holds no performance surprises. It delivers smooth power on-demand. The 5-speed auto switches gears easily and always seems to be in the correct gear. Power is abundant, and if you don't watch yourself, the easy-riding suspension (even with the TRD Off-Road pkg) will have you cruising beyond the posted speed limit before you know it.
On a long highway trip, you'll notice that the rougher pavements will transfer to your seat. After all, it is a truck.
