Author's Review
I bought a 2005 Toyota Corolla S in August 2005; it had 3 miles on it when I bought it. I bought the car largely for the increasing gas prices. So far, I've gotten between 32 and 36 miles per gallon.
The price of the car, especially when you add in operating costs, was better than most. I also looked at the Mazda 3, which was similar in price and options, but the gas mileage was 10 miles per gallon less. The new Honda Civic was substantially more expensive than the Toyota Corolla.
This car has offered all the quality I expected from Toyota. There have been zero returns to the dealer for any type of warranty work or other problems (in about three and a half years, I have just over 64,000 miles on it).
I would really like to have is a trunk release button on the remote, so the trunk could opened keyless. In addition, I would like to be able to turn off the automatic headlights/daytime running lights. I noticed some other Toyota cars have this option.
While just about all manufacturers offer extended maintenance intervals, it still helps that Toyota has the 5,000 mile oil changes as factory recommended, adding in to the operating costs. I had been using the Mobil 5000 or 7500 mile oil, and that seems to have worked well. I just upgraded to Amsoil in both the engine and transmission. I'm going to try to set a new record for how long I can get this car to last!
