Fun for the Money

Pros: Aggressive Looks, Handling, Fun for the Money, Standard Equipment, Easy to use convertible top

Cons: Storage is limited, Six speed would be nice

The Bottom Line: You will be hard pressed to find more fun for the dollar. This is an awesome little convertible. Toyota has a winner with this edition of the MR2.

This is Toyota's entry into the world of affordable sports cars. The 2001 MR2 Spyder is a fantastic little convertible, and I challenge you to find more FUN for the dollar.

For only having 138 hp @ 6400 rpm the MR2 is very zippy. I only wish they would have given the car a six speed instead of a five speed maybe in 2002. The handling is superb, however, if you are not use to the mid engine rear drive configuration the MR2 can catch you off guard. The ride for a stiff suspension is excellent; although if you live were potholes are abundant the ride can be a little rough. The driving compartment is very roomy. Headroom is very good when the top is up, and legroom is also very good this coming from an individual who is 6'2.

Storage space is a premium with this little beauty; however, most people who are interested in this type of vehicle are not taking the family along on a vacation. There is enough room for a couple overnight bags for that weekend trip through the mountains.

Toyota overall has done a nice job with the MR2 Spyder. They have delivered an economical sports car for a very good price, and a TON of FUN to drive. If in the market for this type of car I'd highly recommend at test drive of a MR2 Spyder. Only problem is good luck finding one during the summer months. Production is limited to 5000 units.
