Toyota 2001 MR2 Spyder—A Dream Car if You’re Willing to Pack Light

by   ericgoldman ,  Apr 22, 2001
Pros: Superior Looks, Great Handling, Cheaper than Competition, Good Fuel Economy, Quality Construction
Cons: Ridiculously Limited Storage Space, Substandard Acceleration, Limited Production
The Bottom Line: Put the top down and the Spyder is one of the finest driving experiences available. Just don’t try to bring anything with you!
Review: The Toyota MR2 Spyder is one of the latest of the 2 seater “lower-priced” high-performance roadsters that have become enormously popular over the past decade. Other cars in the niche include the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z3, the Honda S2000 and the...

What a ball to drive!

by   cmonfradi ,  Feb 14, 2001
Pros: Fun to drive. Great handling. All options included.
Cons: Limited storage space. No cruise control.
The Bottom Line: It's great to pay $25k for something this fun to drive. Sure, it's impractical, but I love it when people stop me and want to look at my Porsche!
Review: I have been an avid sports car fan for quite some time, owning a Nissan 300 ZX as well as a Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4. After driving a Jeep Wrangler for a couple years, I had a craving for a sports car again.

So, after months of research and road...

Pound for pound, the most fun that you can have legally

by   wcking ,  Apr 23, 2001
Pros: Unique styling, great handling, peppy acceleration, fun to drive, great gas mileage, comfortable seats
Cons: Lack of storage, 140 wear rated tires (sticky, but not long lasting)
The Bottom Line: Looking for a convertible sports car that's a head turner and fun to own and drive? Look no further than the MR2 Spyder. Find one, buy it, drive it, smile.
Review: I needed a replacement car after my 1995 Integra was humiliated by being stripped and dumped on a side street resting on 4 donuts. Looking around for a suitable fun to drive car (okay - I am in the second half of my 40's and the second half of my...

Fast - Great Look - Cheap! Spyder!

by   JGroetsch ,  Mar 10, 2001
Pros: All Good!
Cons: Nothing Bad!
The Bottom Line: This car is a great car!
Review: We just recently got this car brand new! A brand new Metalic Blue 2001 MR2 Spyder Convertable Coupe. The car looks great and drives great. You can feel special if you have one because they are limited. They only make 4000 of these worldwide per year. The...

Get one and people will stare

by   jianlyn ,  Jun 24, 2001
Pros: Small convertible, strong engine, Toyota reliability
Cons: Good luck finding one - they are limited, very little storage space, no cruise control
The Bottom Line: If you can find one, buy it. It's an investment since they are so limited.
Review: People will stare when you drive this car because there are so few of them out on the road. Toyota is only making 5,000 a year. This is great if you're lucky enough to find one. However, since they are so limited dealers are marking up the prices....

An engineer's perspective

by   philipwheeler ,  May 27, 2001
Pros: Looks great, economical, a blast to drive!
Cons: Tiny cargo space
The Bottom Line: If you love the classic British sports cars, you will be thrilled with the Spyder.
Review: I learned to drive in a Triumph TR4, quite a roadster from the late-1960's. The Toyota MR2 Spyder is darned close, and much better in terms of safety features. I've yet to hit the 1,000 mile mark on mine so I have not tested its performance to the limit,...

After 15 years, the love affair continues!

by   mrs2 ,  Jul 5, 2001
Pros: Cute, fun, reliable, yet affordable sports car!
Cons: Limited storage space
The Bottom Line: Buy it, drive it, love it. It's like a little ecosystem unto itself. You can buy a car to haul stuff in, or you can buy this car to drive!
Review: As the title implies, fifteen years ago I purchased a cute little black car. I was a single mother of one, and I figured I only needed a two-seater. Although it was a budgetary stretch, I also figured I'd have it forever. 240,000+ miles later, I was...

I Love my MR2

by   zenbi ,  Jun 11, 2001
Pros: Porsche-like styling, Excellent Handling, Inexpensive
Cons: Limited Storage
The Bottom Line: Buy it, lease it, rent it. Just get back to having fun behind the wheel.
Review: This car is a paradox looking for a place to happen. The moment the weather is warm, you will want to take the top down and drive your significant other to the nearest beach destination...barely being able to fit a small gym bag in the tiny storage...

Fun for the Money

by   jfthompson ,  Jun 23, 2001
Pros: Aggressive Looks, Handling, Fun for the Money, Standard Equipment, Easy to use convertible top
Cons: Storage is limited, Six speed would be nice
The Bottom Line: You will be hard pressed to find more fun for the dollar. This is an awesome little convertible. Toyota has a winner with this edition of the MR2.
Review: This is Toyota's entry into the world of affordable sports cars. The 2001 MR2 Spyder is a fantastic little convertible, and I challenge you to find more FUN for the dollar.

For only having 138 hp @ 6400 rpm the MR2 is very zippy. I only...

Make driving a blast!

by   mrclaude2 ,  Jul 24, 2001
Pros: Fun, fun, fun!
Cons: Small, small, small
The Bottom Line: If you want driving to be fun, and you enjoy top down motoring, consider the MR2.
Review: My wife previously owned a Pontiac Fiero. Ever since, she's been wanting a little sports car again. On her short list were the Honda Del Sol, Mazda Miata, and BMW Z3. We purchased a Chrysler Sebring in 1996 that we thoroughly enjoyed. But we wanted to...
