Author's Review

I bought my 1989 toyota 4 wheel drive new in 1990 and it now has 239,000 miles on it with the original engine and transmission. It still gets decent mileage - between 18-22 mpg ( it is a 4 cyl ) although it is a bit gutless on the hills. The exhaust system was replaced and that was shown to be the weak spot in the '89s by Consumer Reports. I've done the brakes and clutch twice and the starter and a few misc small things (a wheel bearing and seals were the latest) but that's about it. Reverse and 1st gear complain a bit but they aren't close to replacement time yet. The most annoying thing has been the broken cup holder! These trucks are great in the hills and I've towed a small 1 horse trailer ( and horse ) with mine although it was slow going. My mechanic has a standard "you ready to sell yet? - I have someone interested" line when I bring the truck in for servicing.
Given the gas mileage I get and the mileage I see on a lot of the new cars and trucks I guess I won't be buying something with more seating any time soon. The lack of seating and storage has been my biggest complaint because I cheaped out when I bought the truck and didn't get the extended cab. There are seat belts for three people on the bench seat but the only person that can sit in the middle seat is someone under 5 - and a short under 5 at that! My only other complaint would be the quality of the paint job but I guess I shouldn't gripe if the truck is 18 years old. How long are these paint jobs supposed to last anyway?
You can't go wrong with a Toyota truck - especially an older one!
