Author's Review
I hate Toyotas. Always have. By mistake I ended up renting this car for one week for a long cross country and so had a chance to spend many hours daily in this car and well...
I got to admit. I loved this car.
It took awhile for the car to grow on me but it did.
1. It barely drinks gas. It just drives for hours and seems like it's running on air (Or electricity)
2. It's quiet. WOW. I've never been in such a quiet car. A few times I left the car in the parking lot and realized I didn't close the engine (It then doesn't let you lock the auto locks or else I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't close the engine). A few times after starting the car I tried again and again cause it was so silent I wasn't aware the engine is on. Since there's no key to start the ignition only a button- and after pressing it it sometimes doesn't shut of the ignition it's easy to get confused.
3. It's relatively comfortable for a Toyota. Yes, yes, I know some will say all Toyotas are comfortable. But I found them to be practical rather than comfy most of the times. This one is a little different. You can actually do a cross country and not get cramps all over.
4. Ease of Use: It's a relatively easy car to handle. The only issue is locking the car which after a week and endless trials I still couldn't fully figure out why sometimes the car would lock and sometimes it wouldn't. Another issue is the ignition button rather than a key. The key was a much better device. With the button, since this car is so quiet it hard to figure out if the car is turned on or off at any given moment.
5. Safety. Checking this car before renting it, it seems all car journalists online are unanimous about the high safety features of this car. It has it all. Air bags, high crash ratings etc...
6. Space: There's a lot of space both in the front for tall drivers and in the back as well as a lot of room for luggage.
7. Acceleration. While it won't compete in any Indy 500 it does accelerate well.
In these hard ecomonic times- these cars aren't cheap but they do supply a vision into the future of cars and the possibility of driving a car that needs very little amounts of gas.
For the extra price Toyota's charging, I think every person should do the math if it's worth it to drive a hybrid. It's a great bargain for those needing to drive a lot on a daily or weekly bassis. For others it might still be out of reach.
For those caring about the enviroment and willing to pay for it. It might also be worth it.
The car's a Toyota, which means that the resale value will be high and the maintanence will be low. Toyota is one of the top three most reliable brands in the planet in any given year in any given category so one can buy this car knowing that it probably won't see the mechanic very often not to mention the fact it's a CAMRY ... a car that actually has only two real competitors. LEXUS... (Which really isn't a competitor since they're basically one and the same) and HONDA ACCORD.
The new Nissan Hybrids are also worth checking out for those interested in cars in this category. They're historically not as reliable as Toyota but they're much more fun to drive.
The Camry was designed not to be special in any category. It's not super fun to drive. It's not super comfortable. It doesn't have a specific look that makes you go AHHH...and fall in love.
It feels like this car like all their other cars were designed by Robots to appeal to a huge faceless mass. It's an AVERAGE car which is both it's strength and it's weakness. It does everything a car needs to do and does it good even great- but nothing is WOWA WEEWA! AMAZING. Bottom line- it's not a car that you fall in love with at first sight.
Everything is located logically. Everything works just like a work car - practical. But nothing more.
There's a lot of room both in the front and in the back and there's ample space in the luggage compartement in the back. Everything is there. But the heart!
That's always been my resistance to Toyota and that' why every time I'm shopping for new cars I always check their latest models and eventually pass and buy a different brand.
But the new Camry Hybrid is a little different. Toyota are the leaders in Hybrid technology and the Camry is a leader in family Hybrid sedans. For the first time I felt in this car they had something that made them a little bit special.
For those needing a car for long distance daily driving and also one for the whole family this is a good option... and also one that will make you feel moral, good and green! (and a little bit of a sucker for paying a little to much for it too)
But now, with the prices falling, it might be the time to consider this one.
