Author's Review
Purchased this laptop within days of it's release from Circuit City. I opted for the U305-S5107 model. To me, it's the perfect size. 12"ers are too small while 14"ers feel to big. Weighing only 4 lbs makes it perfect for going to school/on the go computing. At the time I was shopping, it had the same processor speed (or faster) than its competition. Twice the ram (2gb), hd space (160gb), and latest features (built-in web cam and finger print reader)!
The laptop has a great design. Everything is logically placed and the keyboard is comfortable. It felt slightly smaller but you quickly get used to it. USB ports on both sides for left or right handed users. Power cord connects from the rear (I prefer this rather than one side).
Features:
Built-in webcam - very good for an integrated unit. Video is clear and smooth. The mic pics up sounds very clearly even a couple ft away.
Fingerprint reader - neat! however it does take some getting used to. You get the option to fingerprint protect passwords so you don't have to type them in. Sometimes I have to swipe my finger across a few times before it reads it.
Pentium Core Duo: very fast. I don't play games so I can't comment on that. Every application has quickly started and runs smoothly. I don't think I can bog it down with my basic requirements (browsing, chatting, word processing, slides, etc).
It does come with a lot of bloatware installed. Lots of trialware and unnecessary software that causes the laptop to boot slow. After uninstalling all of it, the speed greatly improved.
I noticed BSOD (blue screen) a couple times if you shut the display while the laptop is in the process of shutting down.
Battery life has been great for me. Since the unit is so compact, it can get hot where the processor is. The fan or something seems to cycle on and off which can be a bit annoying.
