Product Review

Great TV

by   firemedic38 ,   Dec 17, 2006

Pros:  Great picture, Plenty of hook-ups (2HDMI), attractive

Cons:  Expensive bulb, (but they all are).

The Bottom Line:  Great TV with plenty of options for hooking up stuff and looks great in the room. Love the picture quality too.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I have had this TV for one year. It has worked great with Digital Cable and the HD package. The HD picture is flawless but as with all HD TV's, the regular channels could use a little more clarity. Keep in mind that once you've watched HD you don't really want to watch the others anyway. Besides, the network channels are all broadcast in HD anyway. I have the TV in a room that is 18'x 20' and it is not oversized at all, (at least not to me or my family).
The only problem I've had is I needed a bulb after 7 months. It has been on a lot in that time though, (we watch way too much TV). It was free, since i purchased the extended warranty but could have cost $300 which is typical of any of the bulbs today. I had the lamp set on hi-bright but have changed it to low since i replaced the bulb. I'm not sure how long this one will last but I'll update the page when it does need replacement. I am happy with my purchase and would do it again
I had a hard time rating the sound because anyone with a TV like this would have a home theater system to give them the a better all around experience.
The cost of my TV was less than the MSRP of $5200 at the time because it had been returned and was on the floor. As it turns out when I went back with a truck to pick it up, I ended up with a new boxed TV for the price of the floor model. Someone in the store had sold the one on the floor and it had been replaced that morning with a new TV. The manager said it did not make sense to make the change. Caused a little confusion with store security but the manager gave approval, (right place at the right time i guess). Shop around and maybe you'll have the same luck. I was told by my salesman that a lot of people buy the big TV's and end up exchanging them for a smaller one because it looks too big when they get it home.

Ran into a little problem after hooking up my new PS3. PS3 supports 1080p. It could not send a 1080P signal to my TV through the HDMI cable. I called Toshiba and was given the following explanation. The TV does display a 1080p signal as advertised but does it by up-converting a 1080i signal and de-interlacing to produce a 1080p picture. The TV is not capable of receiving and 1080p signal and sending it to the display. The Toshiba rep stated they only make 2 tv's that can actually receive and send a 1080p. This is really not a problem as the picture is excellent as it is. The cable and satellite companies only send up to 1080i anyway so I had never seen the problem before. This does not change my rating of this tv and I would still recommend it. The picture you see from a 1080i signal is 1080p quality.
