Author's Review
Top Gear:DareDevil is fun little arcade game. I will not call it a racing game, because there is only one multiplayer mode that is actually racing.
Gameplay
The single player mode consists of 27 missions broken up among 4 areas, Rome, London, Tokyo, and San Francisco. Missions consist of driving around collecting coins before the time runs out. You can also pick two other items to help you finish the mission. Nitro will give you a short burst of speed, and clocks will add more time. There are actually three types of clocks, each one adds a different amount of time. If you find the wrench, you get an extra continue. Each area has a different number of missions to try. If you find the key in every mission in a particular area, you will open a bonus mission where you destroy stuff for points. If you beat a certain score, you win a new paint job for car. You don't have to play each mission in order, but you have to complete every mission in an area before a new area opens up for you. You don't need to collect every coind to complete a mission, but if you get them all it will unlock a new, better car. The cars are not you high end sports cars like in most racing type games, although you unlock some near the end of the game. Most are silly looking little compact cars. For example, I actually had to work my way up to a Mini Cooper.
Multiplayer has three modes: Coin grab, get more coins than your opponent. Lap race, race a certain number of laps. Bomb tag: hold on to the bomb the longest, then give it to your opponent before it explodes.
Aesthetics
Sound is decent, nothing spectacular here. Graphics are very good. The cars are highly detailed and even have a little driver in them that will actually turn the steering wheel when you turn. (nice touch KemCo) Non player cars look just as good as player cars. The buildings and objects on the streets look good and have a nice variety of thing to run over. i.e exploding gas pumps in Rome, toilet stalls in London, you can even smash bus stops down hehehe) I found a small amount of pop-up, but most of the time you are so busy trying to find the next coin, that you won't notice it.
Control
I found the control to be a little weak. It is hard to get the cars to turn. The wheels turn but the car often continues in a straight line. In many games you can use the handbrake to help a car turn tighter. In Top Gear it is a requirement to get the car to turn, unless you are going very slow. This may be a product of the low end cars I have been driving (I haven't finished the game yet), but I found it a little frustrating at first when my car hit the wall without even seeming to move off a straight line at all. This may make the game extremely difficult and frustrating for young players.
Overall
I really like this game. It isn't what I expected when I bought it, but it is very fun. You can learn to get around the control issues pretty quickly. Keep in mind that it isn't meant to be a racing game, though.
