Wipeout, dude
Date of Review: Sep 4, 2000
As a newbie to the Gameboy scene, I am unsure of the types of games to acquire for my system. Being in my mid-thirties, arcade games from the 1980's and 1990's bring back memories and a sense of familiarity when I see them on GameBoy systems. Toobin' is one such example. You are Bif drifting down various rivers in your innertube. You steer through flags that are on the course while picking up various items and avoiding other hazards in the water and from the shore.
This game does not translate well from the old arcade console game to the GameBoy. While PacMan and Ms. PacMan are exactly the same on a GameBoy as they were fifteen years ago on the old arcade consoles, Toobin does not "shrink to fit" the GameBoy. I have seen some GameBoy games eliminate some detail from the N64 system to make the GameBoy experience easier to enjoy, such as Mario Golf. This game is trying to put too much detail into the GameBoy. It gets hard to differentiate from "good things" and hazards in the water. On the Amazon River course, I kept losing turns on the same place until I finally "squenched" to see what the hazard was.
My expectations were probably high as Ms. PacMan, my first GameBoy game, had the exact look and feel as the old game. I had thought that this game would translate well for the GameBoy.
While I have to share my system with a first grade daughter, this game is easy to learn and play for her. She does like it, not having my high expectations and memories of the original. Unless you see this one at your favorite used game place for $10, I would try something else.
