Author's Review
In Tony Hawk's American Wasteland (THAW) there are plenty of game modes that can keep you occupied for hours. Along with some new features.
The original Tony Hawk's game were just 2 minute runs to get as many of the goals as you can in unrealistic areas and towns. But the addition of getting off your board in Tony Hawk's Underground changed that, in THUG and up, you are not timed, and you can get off your board, meaning the levels have to be more realistic.
Career Mode
In career mode you come from a small town outside of Hollywood and you come into Hollywood, on a bus. You can choose from 4 different skaters, but then change their looks. When you get into Hollywood you meet a girl named Mindy, who helps you through the game.
You learn how to do everything by other people teaching you how. At one point in the game Tony Hawk even teaches you how to do the 900.
The main point of this game is coming from a nobody to a proskater, but you run into a lot of stuff on your way there. Such as the skate ranch. The skate ranch is a piece of land that mindy, and a couple of other people are trying to make a skatepark out of. So on some of the goals you do, you destroy stuff, and they send a tow truck and bring that piece to the ranch, and then you can go skate on it.
The storyline has some unbelievable twists and turns, that you know wouldn't happen in real life. Even with it being unrealistic, it is still a great game, and career mode is great, and you can get quiet a bit of gameplay out of it.
Classic Mode
Classic mode takes you back to the first 4 Tony Hawk's games. There are a couple extra goals, but the rest are just like the old Tony Hawks. You can still collect S-K-A-T-E, you still get sick score, secret tape, and more. You even go back to the old levels! Classic mode is great, and on a couple different skill levels, you can play it for a while.
Online Play
This is probably what most people buy this game, or at least this is what i bought it for. Online you play with other players, on trick attack, capture the flag, graffiti and more. Some people don't like online, but its the only thing I do anymore, because I have already beaten the game so many times.
Create-A-Modes
There are also Create-A-Modes, like Create-A-Park, Skater, and Trick. On Create A Skater, you get to choose everything from his size, to his eyes. You get to choose his skin color (you can make it blue, green, or anything), his eyes, his shirt, his hair, his hair color and more.
Create A Park is why most people don't like online. Some people create a park hoping that it will freeze you. They make you fall into a freeze-pit and you freeze and have to restart your PS2. But Create A Park can also be good, you can create parks that wouldn't be seen in a normal game, you can make big air parks, vert parks, all-around parks, realistic parks, or anything. The one great thing about create-a-park is that there are some special pieces that wouldn't be in the normal game, such as boost floor tiles, boost ramps, and more.
The Rest
This game has voice acting, making the game better, and not as repetative. The voices are good, but the lips don't usually match what they're saying.
The characters are good-looking. The only way you can really glitch with characters is if you used cheats, which I highly suggest you don't do because it ruins the game.
The levels are very good looking, and they are easy to get combos in because you can get from one piece to another without touching the ground, if you knew the level good enough, you could probably get from 1 side to another with even touching the ground. Thats a good, and a bad thing. A good becuase, well more points, bad because some people abuse it and just do the same thing again, and again and again.
My opinion on this game, is that you should buy it, but it shouldn't be your first prioraty, because after you have beaten it the only thing you can do is online, and that gets boring because of freezing.
The soundtrack for this game is good, with rock, punk, pop and in between. They have some songs that are widely known, but also some good, not so well known songs. It makes for a great soundtrack, which makes the game better.
