A Classic

Tearjerker?!? I see that is the genre label given to this movie. Who made THAT up? I think that is grossly inaccurate. Yes, I was moved to tears, but that is a miscategorization (oh my, what a long word). Calling it a tearjerker somehow cheapens it, and this is a noble movie.
The book was beautiful, heartwrenching and moving, with wonderful morals
and lessons, the story told by a young girl as she watched her strong father demonstrate his integrity and courage.
The movie is a well done film version of the story. It is hard to capture on film all that one can imagine while reading, since such different senses are involved in reading and viewing, but I think Robert Mulligan did a great job in his translation into film. Gregory Peck is the perfect choice for Atticus Finch. He exudes a quiet strength and such a deep personal character. He is gentle and loving with his children and intent on being a good example for them.
It is actually a simple story, not complicated, but still with an impact and messages that are timeless. About compassion and equality and integrity (I could use that word over and over in describing this movie).
Please don't be put off by the incorrect labeling of this one.
