To Kill A Mockingbird - A child's perspective of our ugly past.

Date of Review:  Jan 9, 2002
The Bottom Line: To Kill A Mockingbird definitely could have been done better. The book, however, is great, and I recommend reading it.
Review: I wrote this review as an assignment in school. I received a good grade. I thought others might want to read it.

Everyone loved Harper Lee?s To Kill A Mockingbird, but was it such a good idea to turn it into a movie? To Kill A Mockingbird...

Aging Message Film: To Kill A Mockingbird

Date of Review:  Jun 15, 2007
The Bottom Line: An old fashioned message film with a strong performance by Gregory Peck. The unique viewpoint fascinates for a time but grows old. Good for one time through.
Review: To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

"...remember it [is] a sin to kill a mockingbird ...they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us." Atticus Finch

When a film establishes a character as "the greatest hero in American...

Robert Mulligan's -To Kill a Mockingbird-1963

Date of Review:  Aug 12, 2002
The Bottom Line: Here's another movie which is a classic combination of great performances, and a great story. The lawyer is a good guy! Doesn't that make it a fantasy?
Review: ?You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...?til you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.?

That has got to among the best lines ever spoken by a lawyer in any movie, and should all by...

To Kill a Mockingbird -- Rising up above the stereotypes.

Date of Review:  Nov 2, 2003
The Bottom Line: Looking at the shadowy edges of life in the Depression in the deep South, it's an excellent study of human nature and racial stereotypes.
Review: There's something about this film that I can't quite put my finger on. In terms of film-making, it's one of the best in terms of lighting, characters, adaptation of a novel, and of course, storytelling. Told through the eyes and memories of Scout...

A Light In The Atticus

Date of Review:  Aug 8, 2003
The Bottom Line: This fine film adaptation of Harper Lee's classic novel captures with heartbreaking clarity the stuff of childhood and the evils of the adult world.
Review: I spent today in my home dance studio, carefully working my way through a series of pliers and tap combinations in order to get my famous legs back into full fighting trim for my upcoming projects. It was grueling work; thank heavens I had a full...

To Kill a Mockingbird Sees Through a Child's Eyes

Date of Review:  Dec 9, 2003
The Bottom Line: A quiet story of a child's understand of the world and its complicated nature.
Review: In this period of abject poverty (due to Christmas and other factors), I haven't gone out to rent any movies at the video store in the past few weeks. However, I still have a lot of cheap videos and tapes in my collection, some of which haven't been...

Riveting Southern Courtroom Drama

Date of Review:  Jan 14, 2000
Review: I can think of several other courtroom dramas I enjoy, but next to The Rainmaker this is my favorite. Based on the outstanding novel by Harper Lee, this 1962 release is ranked 34 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Greatest American...

Classics One Wishes We No Longer Needed

Date of Review:  Feb 23, 2007
The Bottom Line: In a somewhat disjointed tale, Atticus Finch defends a black man in the South during the Depression while his children's curiosity puts them in a similar situation.
Review: There is a temptation, I believe, to overrate movies that are considered "classics." Some classics certainly are worthy of being rated as perfect. Many, most - just like today's movies -, do not. Meryl Streep giving a great performance does not make...

Don?t listen to the nay Sayers, this is still relevant!

Date of Review:  Jul 7, 2007
The Bottom Line: Read the book first, but this film is an American classic, with some great performances, memorable characters and is still worth seeing today.
Review: Based on the Harper Lee classic, this film is set in the South in the 1930s, as upstanding white lawyer and father Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) decides to defend black man Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), on trial for raping a white girl. Meanwhile his...

A Classic

Date of Review:  May 21, 2000
Review: Tearjerker?!? I see that is the genre label given to this movie. Who made THAT up? I think that is grossly inaccurate. Yes, I was moved to tears, but that is a miscategorization (oh my, what a long word). Calling it a tearjerker somehow cheapens it,...
