Author's Review
First off, there ARE better radios out there but not with these features, so just becareful with hype from some reviewers. I tried this out and had it for a long while and liked it but its not compelling. Its: small , nice furniture, functional and easy to use. Its a pretty piece of equipment. It has sharp lighted graphics from sirius going across it and makes a great night light. Simple to use and can we say NO WIREs from seven channels and speakers and I got space on my desk now? Now I would love a small unit with seven speakers and surround sound but there is no option for that at this price range so I tried this radio. No hard to understand tuning knobs and electronic controls with pages of menus to read. However that said, if you read some reviews this might sound like a good Bose system or Harmon Kardon which it isn't, its just a good all in one unit with satelitte reception. I read about special technology and all and well, but the best advice is try it out. To me its the size and quality which is good and not much else about it is exceptional. .
Most important is sound quality and well its Good and above average but there are better. It can be transferred to stereo which is a big plus with the push of a button. Its not anything compelling because of one thing; lack of wattage.
Suggest you find anything else though that plays mono sound fm and satellite built in and very small and be as satisfied but thats not all. This has a small lever for stereo and this is now where this unit gets value and interesting. Well guess what, I am selling my $200 dollars Pioneer receiver cause for just radio I think this is better for small room but ultimately changed my mind ( updated) I wish all the stereo things were included and not going to start sending for things after paying for something that I was not able to test out first. Tivoli should have just included the extra stereo speakers. . Pioneer sound with six channels while better by a little was not that much so because it doesn't incorporate all its surround qualities for digital radio and its overkill. Actually the tivoli has better tremble then the Pioneer but would have loved ( MORE then anything I said in this review) for Tivoli to have pumped out more volume and had a tone and bass switch..and included the stereo speaker and subwoofer . Its almost there but not quite. I would have no hesitation to check out anything they make in the future.
Also sometimes I am not sure what I am impressed about most, the tivoli radio or the satellite music which is so much better then FM. Whatever it works and its is simple, small and smart, sleek satisfying, and well for students and or people who like to take the complexity out of their sound ,this might be for them and Maybe there is not anything that needs changing. I though would look for a surround small all together system in the future
. I did look forward to attaching more devices and other stereo speakers to this unit ( updated I ultimately sold it). It does have a stereo switch which gets lost somewhere when they talk about this but you need to buy optional speakers: one for added stereo and one for subwoofer or bass ( I forget ). It has auxillary in jack that makes other devices come thru the unit like a md player.
COOOL radio! I find I use this much more then commercial fm receiver from Pioneer. The real questions are, being a newbie on receivers and satellite, do I like satellite radio or the unit better?
Update a few days later:
I have since added a 24 watt computer associates speakers coming from subwoofer output port on back and it adds to sound. I did this to try to get a feel cheaply to see if I want to get optional speakers from tivoli and I am now thinking yes ( but I ultimately didn't want the hassle or costs). The added stereo speakers add allot to music even if it was just in subwoofer port . You not only have a fine tuned machine to bring in fine quality fm but now you got stereo fm and satellite which makes this really a nice small package that is hard to not to like . To be fair to Tivoli though I never tried it with optional speakers just a speaker in the subwoofer port and I liked what I heard.Tivoli should market both speakers included with unit!!! Bottom line is even with negatives, I recommend this to buy and if Tivoli makes a few revisions can easily sell many many many of these in future. Promising device and company and it just may be for you if you want something small and unprenticious.
