I Love This Radio
Date of Review: May 28, 2004
The Bottom Line: This is not only a great radio, it's a great conversation piece. Buy two; you'll want one for your home and office!
I searched all around for a quality table top radio, then one day I came upon an advertisement for the Tivoli Model One and I had to try it. It was everything the ad touted. Great sound, classic controls, superb reception, and elegant looks.
I chose the cherry wood/cobalt model, but there are many different color combinations available. When the radio arrived from Tivoli the colors were just as vibrant as the picture had shown.
The sound from the Model One's single speaker is equally as vibrant as the color. There is an enormous amount of bass that bellows from the tiny speaker, and just enough treble to equal out the sound. If you are a person who likes to fiddle with the bass and treble controls, however, you may be disappointed to find there are none. Fret not, Tivoli is all about sound and the factory preset is perfect.
The Tivoli Model One personal radio has two antenna settings. You can use the internal antenna which is very powerful, or plug in the supplied external antenna, flip a switch, and pick up even more channels. The reception is clear even for radio stations that are well out of my local area.
The old-school tuning dial is incredible. It has a tight, well-manufactured feel, and when you are getting close to a good signal, the green light on the front Model One will glow brighter and brighter until you are perfectly tuned in. This is a very helpful feature. It does takes a while to switch from one end of the band to the other, but the Model One's dial is so fine-tuned that it is worth your time.
The Model One is built sturdy. Though it is a small unit, it has tremendous weight for its size due to the heavy speaker magnet and solid wood case. The rubber pads keep the radio from sliding and allow sound to resonate from the specifically designed bass hole underneath. Even the classic on/off switch is built tough.
This is a great radio for the money. The sturdy build, the classic design, and the modern sound make the Model One worth every single penny. Buy two, you'll want one at work and at home. I did.
