Author's Review
i record a LOT of shows everyday while at work, i used to have three VCR's to record all my favorite shows on different channels and eventually had one vcr go bad so i figured instead of replacing it i would get out of the 'stone age' and get into some new technology so i found a used Tivo on ebay that had lifetime service included.
it was a model TCD 649080 which is a dual tuner unit that can record two shows at the same time. i also went and bought another new Tivo and since i had lifetime service on the first one i could buy lifetime for the second Tivo at a hundred dollar savings $399-$299 so now i dont have to worry about paying any fees ever again.
yes the initial cost is expensive but think of the cost of monthly service which is around $13 (around $150/yr) so after a few years it will pay for itself.
the instructions are very easy to follow and everything you will need to install is included with the Tivo (YouTube even has instructional videos available online)
you use some of the supplied cables to hook up the unit, follow the on-screen instructions, setup an account online at Tivo.com and the unit will download updated software and install it so your always updated with the newest features. the initial update might take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour or so.
but once the setup is complete you can sit back and enjoy life with your Tivo!! i dont know why i ever owned a VCR after using my Tivo, it takes a little getting used to all the features but you will get the hang of it.
there are a lot of features but the coolest one has to be online scheduling, if im not at home i can get online someplace, and go into my Tivo account and setup my recordings that way. its a very handy feature to have.
one other great feature with this model is it can record two shows at the same time while you are watching a third. a dual tuner is the only way to go and highly recommended. but if your wanting to record in HD you will need to buy a different Tivo model #.
i also found a small hack that i can do to the remote which will turn the advance button into a 30 second skip feature which is fantastic for jumping past commercials!
i could keep going on telling about all the great stuff a Tivo can do but you would just be wasting time here by not getting out and buying your own Tivo!
just go get one and start enjoying your new 'toy'
