Author's Review
The Tivo Series 2 DVR is great. The programmability is very easy and flexible. We only record show we want our children to watch. We get to watch shows we would normally miss because of homework and bedtime. Now we get to watch all our favorite shows at our leisure, and in less time when we skip commercials.
Some feature could be better.
- Some shows are not labeled, and get recorded even if they are repeats.
- Some show for the season pass show up on more than one channel, or have different airings and get recorded more than once per day.
- If a sports show interrupts your start time, Tivo is unaware of the changes.
However great these features are, Tivo lacks simple features for the sole purpose of sucking money out of your wallet.
- Tivo doesn't have a dual channel input. You need to buy your own splitter so you can watch live TV while you are recording. This is a basic function of most VCR's.
- Tivo only allows you to transfer shows to other Tivo's. They have wrapped the recording in a copyright system so you can't quickly send it to another DVR.
- If you do buy a second Tivo, you have to pay a monthly fee. It is half the monthly fee of the first, even if you paid for a lifetime service. There should be a better discount. If I have cable/ Sattellite in more than one room, I don't pay extra.
- If you want to save it to DVD/VCR, this is the same as watching it. You can't watch something else from Tivo while your are recording. ( I understand this is a performance issue ).
- Now they will be offering Tivo to Go. Which allows you to transfer it to you laptop. THis is good, but it sounds like they may be charging extra for this feature too.
- And if you want to record it to DVD on your PC, you need to buy extra software for that too.
I would love to have a second Tivo, But I am waiting for more bang for the buck.
