A little-known Shakespeare masterpiece presented with true Elizabethan panache.

Date of Review:  May 31, 2003
The Bottom Line: This is a supreme example of grand guignol, superbly acted, superbly staged. Shakespeare, the master of Elizabethan hyperbole in presentation, would have been thrilled.
Review: There is no little debate about what "Titus [Andronicus]" actually is. When Shakespeare entered the playwriting business, the playgoing public was very much into what we would now call Gothic horror. This is the era of "The Duchess of Malfi" and...

Date of Review:  Sep 19, 2001
The Bottom Line: This movie is not for everyone. But if you have a love of Shakespeare, and can stomach the violence ,don't miss it. It is visually stunning.
Review: "If one good deed in all my life I did, I do repent it from my very soul".
Harsh words, indeed.

Julie Taymor's 1999 film version of the Shakespearian play she had directed off-broadway,"Titus Andronicus" is a stunning performance of...

Titus Andronicus, the Tragedy of

Date of Review:  Aug 14, 2000
Review: Lucky me! I rented this video and got to watch it in the privacy and seclusion of my own home -- could stop frame, rewind, watch Anthony Hopkins' rendition of Shakespeare's Titus to my heart's content. And then I watched it a second time, with my...

Hamlet On Crack

Date of Review:  Aug 16, 2000
Review: As an 18 year old, when I say I'm a fan of The Bard (William Shakespeare to you unlearned types) and his work, you can guess the kind of awkward glances that are sent my way by my kin and elders alike. The reason for this is understandable--most...

Bold, Bizarre Bloodbath

Date of Review:  Jan 16, 2000
Review: Julie Taymor, who received both critical and popular acclaim for her Broadway version of Disney's "The Lion King," makes her film debut with a curious adaptation of Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus," one of the Bard's lease successful plays.

Blood guts and Goths

Date of Review:  Jul 8, 2006
The Bottom Line: Brilliant and brave version of the Bard's bloodiest play.
Review: Once the great Bard..ehm sorry I mean William Shakespeare wrote a bloody play called "Titus Andronicus". It housed serial misdeeds, many mutilations, a brutal rape and cannibalism. It was his early attempt at catching audiences and thus might have...

Titus

Date of Review:  Jan 17, 2000
Review: Visually stunning and literally visceral, this movie is not for the faint of heart. If Fellini, Kubrick, and Corman had all collaborated, they may have matched Julie Taymor's interpretation of this play, Shakespeare's tale of murder, mutilation,...

Shakespeareans do it caked in mud and gore

Date of Review:  Mar 30, 2000
Review: Rape, dismemberment, cannibalism, war, tattoos...Whoo-ha! We having fun with Shakespeare yet?

I am one of a presumably small population of people that has seen this spectacular film based off of the bloodiest tragedy Shakespeare ever wrote...

At least it has balls

Date of Review:  Feb 5, 2001
The Bottom Line: For me, this film was an out-of-body experience and one that I will not soon forget. But, I don't see most audiences seeing it this way, so be warned.
Review: Titus, based on Shakespeare's play of similar name, is the story of a Roman general who's life is, to say the least, full of violence and the sadness it causes.

The plot is quite complicated, so I won't spend a terrible amount of time on...
