Author's Review
Titanic being given an Academy Award for best picture I think was one of the biggest embarassments of the year. The fact that such a large percentage of the audience that attended this movie were teenage girls should be a major sign of that.
First of all, I automatically become weary off movies that are hyped like this one was. Hype makes me nervous, because it always sets the audience up for a disappointment. Apparently this movie didn't disappoint too many people, because it did great at the box office, but it disappointed me, for a number of reasons.
The first reason is is that I think that it is tasteless to write a movie that makes money off a tragedy like this one did. Basically what James Cameron did was he took a terrible event in history, attached a corny cliched love story to it, and sold it. If this was a movie actually telling what happened to the Titanic, then it would definitely be worth the price of admission. But this doesn't tell the story the story of the Titanic, it merely uses the sinking of the boat as an excuse for some impressive special effects at the end.
That's my second complaint-you have to wait through almost the whole movie to watch the boat sink, and when that's all that you're watching the movie before, then that's just too long to it. I know that this was done for purposes of building up suspense, but when you don't like the movie, suspense isn't really an issue.
Now, the characters, or a few of them. I hated Kate Winslet and Leornardo di Caprio's characters. They are, of course, the center of the cheesy love story, and their characters' names are Rose and Jack. I enjoyed Billy Zane as Rose's fiancee, even though his character is meant to be hated. My favorite character, however, was Kathy Bates'. I think that Kathy Bates is a great actress and I almost feel bad giving the movie such a bad review just because she's in it.
To anyone who might read this, don't think I'm just some dumb teenager who doesn't like good movies. I do like good movies, I liked Gone With the Wind and many other classics, but I just honestly couldn't stand this movie. To me watching it is a chore, and I don't enjoy three hour chores.
Now, odds are that you will probably like this movie, because most everybody else who saw it did. But if you're like me, and you don't like overhyped disappointments, than this movie is definitely not for you.
