Author's Review
Have you ever seen something on television and thought to yourself, "I have to have that!" Of course you have and that is what I thought when I first saw the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB). I had first noticed them on "Dog" while watching him and and his wife playfully bicker back and forth. Like them, my fiance and I wanted a pair.
Well time got away from us and we soon forgot about them. About three months ago though, we fell upon a pair for $100.00 at a high-end retail sunglasses shop. They had one pair left at the 128 MB size and we were told the sunglasses were unisex. I knew my fiance was gushing over them and we bought them then and there.
~What's inside the Packaging~
The Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) comes in a box as stylish as only Oakley can be. In the box you receive the sunglasses themselves. There is a USB Cable with a special adaptor to hook them up to your computer for charging and music. There is a special Oakley Thump Software Disc for the MP3 Player. Lastly there is a quick start guide as well as an accessories booklet.
~Style~
I have to say that when you wear the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) sunglasses, you are sure to attract a lot of attention. People notice them.
It may be the sleek design of the lenses or it could be the ear buds for audio sound. Regardless of the reason, people always seem to ask about them.
The sunglasses wrap around your face contouring to your eyes. They block out the sun from both directions and not just in front of you. The Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) do not have the Polarized Lenses but we are still pleased with the design and reflection from the sun. The models that hold more like the 512 MB have polarized lenses automatically that come with them.
The frame of the Thumps are bendable and seem to be made with plastic and rubber. The frame is extremely durable and if you were to drop them, as I have, it barely makes a scratch on it. You can twist the frame a little to see how flexible it is and it really comes in handy if you are mountain biking. The durability makes you feel safe to use them whether in action or out. They don't flop around easily and they fit on your face with solid formation.
The color that we bought was Matte Black but they also come in Tortoise.
~The Software~
Although I thought I needed to put the Oakley Thump software onto my computer, it is not necessary. You can use Windows Media Player just as easily if you would rather not add more programs to your computer. If you choose to put the software in and use it, it is very easy to follow for installation purposes. It is also very simple to use once you have it loaded onto your computer. I prefer to use the Windows Media Player most of the time out of convenience (I usually always have it up and running) but you do have a choice. You can transfer or charge for a Mac or PC.
As far as the adaptor that goes into the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB), it is very understandable with the directions. The USB cable attaches to your computer while the other end goes into the right side of the Thumps underneath frame. When you aren't adding music or charging them, there is a rubber slot that covers the adaptor area.
There is a tiny light that is green when done charging and blinks red while charging.
~How They Work~
The Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) aren't just stylish though. They also play the best music you decide to add on. With the 128 MB there is about a 30 song limit load and 2-3 hours of listening time before a charge is needed. What I love about the Thumps is that the MP3 Player design is built into the glasses with the rugged look and it looks sleek, not bulky.
On each side of the glasses there are ear buds. These ear buds can fit your ear by pushing them in or pulling them out. You can also flip the ear buds up as well as just move the bud itself around. It may sound difficult to understand, but what I am basically trying to say is that they will fit your face easily. I can wear them and my fiance who has a whole different head wears them as well. They fit great on both of us.
On the right side of the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) is the on/off button in the middle with the forward in front and the reverse in back. The buttons are so tiny that you would never notice them on the side of the frame.
On the opposite side there are two small volume control buttons. The front for higher and the back for lower. It can't get much simpler than that for audio sunglasses for me.
The Thumps get loud enough that you could block out what is around you easily. My fiance has used them on the plane for business trips as well as running in the park. It has quality sound to it.
You know when the power is on and off because a "THUMP" will be heard when turned on and off twice. I am very happy with the sound though and think it is probably as good as you can get in this form of music.
The amount of music that loads on them varies between 28-35. It depends on the length of the song you load on. However, to get through a work out that is plenty of music for me. If you have long work outs or hiking trails for example you may want to look into the 256 MB or the 512 MB. Both models hold a lot more audio.
~The Down and Up Side to the Lenses~
The only complaint I have is that I don't like to wear contacts when I am in the desert sweating from hiking. However I have to with the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) because you can't change the lenses on them. On the up side though you can flip the lenses up if you need to read something or are in a darker area rather than take them off and on.
~Overall Thoughts and Recommendations~
For $100.00 the Oakley Thump MP3 Player (128 MB) sunglasses were a positive buy. I use them and so does my fiance. We haven't got around to buying a second pair. He loves them and raves about them to everyone who asks. I think the unisex style fits women and men. If you are a person on the go and likes to have music without any wires or straps, this is the way to go. Not only are you stylish and sleek but you can jam out to the hits of your choice.
These are an excellent buy and if you live in the desert like I do, they make a great gift for that someone special in your life. Afterall they are sunglasses!
