Author's Review
As an avid lover of games that make one think (instead of the regular shooting games), Thief II far surpassed the first in the series. It takes more cunning, strategy and planning than most other games, and I loved the challenge!!
What's really nice: I didn't care much for their default keyboard controls, so I modified them to suit me. This was a great feature!! The graphics are good- definitely not the highest quality, but pretty well done! And, when you're in a jam with nothing to do, check out www.gamespot.com for tactics and the most complete walkthroughs!
This game can be rated an A on violence. Thief II set the stage for more thinking, out maneuvering, and out smarting the opposition, rather than full frontal attacks. In some of the 15 missions, your objectives tell you NOT to kill anyone. In the missions where it's ok to kill someone, it's nice to have multiple weapons. A sword will make small little red splashes on the ground. However, using the blackjack will only knock the person unconscious, leaving no blood!
Some of the references in Thief II can be quite difficult to understand if you haven't played the first game. However, this only applies when you're listening to the story between the missions. It doesn't interfere with game play at all!
It also has a level editor, so you can create your own levels to have others play. I read online that in Thief II, you need to download something to update the level editor. However, this is a minor inconvenience for a true Thief!
Though this game can be highly challenging on the normal difficulty level, it's compelling to play over and over to see if you can be a better thief than last time. It allows you to challenge yourself each time you play.
