I have a very warped sense of humor. I like things which fall under the heading
Crude, Lude, and Socially Unacceptable... most of the time. I mean, it has to also be funny. To put this into a bit of perspective for you, I am one of the few warped folks out there that did not like
There's Something About Mary. So why in the world did I adore
The Sweetest Thing, then? Hey man, maybe it was my mood. Who knows. This one did have me holding my aching sides a few times though.
Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, and Selma Blair are roommies in the Big Apple. When Cam and Chris come home one day to find Selma weeping buckets over a recent break up, they head to the club to snap her out of it. These chicks like to party, and Cam is a master at
use 'em, abuse 'em, then kick 'em the hell out... Until a chance encounter on the dance floor this fateful night.
Now I'ma tell ya upfront here: If you are easily offended, this is not the movie for you. There is lots of sex and swearing and umm shots, and dick jokes, and and.. you get the drift. It is Rated R for a reason. Of course, that R means age 15 in Sweden, and that is what I mean also. Just so ya know. The
Dick Song in the restaurant totally had me in tears it was so funny.
My body is a movie and your penis is the star!
I like Cameron Diaz. I think she is refreshingly
real. No pretensions with this gal. She has no qualms about acting the fool to get a laugh. This holds true with this film. She isn't like a brilliant actress or anything, but she isn't anybody's slouch either. She has great timing, and the ability to not take life so bloody seriously all the time. That's infectious.
Still. As much as I do like Diaz, the real star of this one in my eyes was Christina Applegate. She gets rid of that blond dye job for this one and plays the snarky, intelligent attorney rather than the ditz. What a wonderful change of pace for her! I was impressed. I really was. Applegate was simply perfect in this one. Her character proved that you can be beautiful and smart and still have hella fun. Is it too late to be her when I grow up?
As for Selma Blair, well, this character could not possibly have been cast better. She looks a bit shy and mousy, while at the same time being just cute as hell... and a real sex bomb. She seems to let her two co-stars take the lead, while she subtly steals a few scenes behind their backs. Delightful! I really hadn't paid Blair much never-mind up until this. I am now reassessing my view of her in a big way.
The real surprise here though was Thomas Jane as Diaz's obsession. I've seen
Face/Off,
Dreamcatcher, and
The Crow, yet I never really noticed this guy. Wow. Why? Man! hubba-hubbbba! Not only is he drop-dead gorgeous with expressive eyes and wonderful dimples, the man has an ornery streak a mile long and you could just tell that it extended well beyond just this particular character portrayal. I want him! (
ok Lars... I'm just kidding here... du är min hingst.) *cough* so anyway, yeah umm Thomas Jane is a fabulous actor. Think I'll go watch
Dreamcatcher again...
I am going with 4 very high stars for
The Sweetest Thing and telling you that if you love crass humor, you need to see this one. Ok, if you are a
chick and love crass humor, you need to see this one. Manly men will not be amused at certain truths revealed here. sorry guys, but there is no sparing of the Male Ego in this one. HA!
