Author's Review
The Sixth Sense has been one of the many movies my husband and I were eagerly awaiting to be released on video. Unlike most movies, we actually rented this one shortly after its video debut. Id heard the film was very scary, a real thriller, so I didnt want to watch it alone, but my husband had been working long hours and would fall asleep each night before we could hit play. Being the wimp that I am, I didnt want to watch this flick alone, but since it was nearly time to return the video and sleeping beauty was snoring away, I decided to just watch the movie once and for all.
It began rather slowly, the tone of the movie was eerie, unsettling and dark. Dr. Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis, is an esteemed child psychologist who seems to need therapy himself. His newest patient, Cole Sear (played by Haley Joel Osment) is a somber and secretive child who reminds Dr. Crowe of a patient he feels that he failed. Cole is plagued by visions of dead people, terrified and alienated. Haley Joel Osment is an amazing actor and quite convincing in this role. Feeling it is his duty to help this boy, Dr. Crowe makes it his mission to save Cole.
Though the story seems to drag at times, the suspense kept me riveted to the television. Though my overworked husband was snoring loudly enough to remind me I wasnt alone, I was quite frightened anticipating what might happen next. I wont reveal the ending, at least not to my readers, but the final scenes of the movie were unexpected and literally made my jaw drop.
The added bonus after the credits, Rules and Clues, was very interesting. Watching the scenes and having the subtle hints to the ending pointed out left me thinking. Part of me wondered how I didnt catch certain clues, granted there were no pawprints, no Handy Dandy Notebook in sight. After watching the Rules and Clues, I am faced with a few conflicts.
-Do I leave the tape cued to the Rules and Clues segment and ruin it for my dear husband?
-Do I watch the film a second time and loudly exclaim Aha! each time I see a clue?
-Do I watch again alone and return the tape to avoid late fees?
-Should I be kind, rewind, and suggest he watch this cool movie while I rate Epinions?
All joking aside, I was impressed with the performances by Willis and especially Osment, I was scared but not terrified. The plot twists were quite unpredictable and the ending....Well, youll see!
