Author's Review
Ok, I know I am like the seven hundred and something-th writer on this movie, but MAN I just had to write an epinion on it. I am not a frequent movie "go-er" or renter for that matter. I am extremely picky with what I watch, and what I allow my children to watch. So many of the movies produced by Hollywood are total brain-numbing, immoral-mind assault, that I usually choose to turn the other cheek rather than view it. But that is for another epinion.
The hubby and I got a night out on the town do to some payback babysitting from a friend. The kids were taken care of, our bellies were full from a nice dinner, and we decided to take in a show...at the Dollar Theater no less. Since we heard such hype about Sixth Sense we decided to go for it. We bought our tickets and entered the totally empty theater. Our guess was we were the only ones in town who had not seen this movie.
Most of Bruce Willis's movies are of the shoot em up, beat em up, stick em up genre, so going to see him in a suit, where he didn't punch someones nose into hamburger, was refreshing. And the fact that he is not too bad on the eyes helped somewhat also. Hey, what can I say, I go for balding men.
I was thoroughly impressed with this movie. I didn't, however, enjoy the gruesome aspects of the flick. This feature had a good bit of blood and gore. Most of what you would find in your typical horror movie. This is my warning to you...if you gag at the site of blood, you might want to miss this movie. In fact, I will go as far as to say I think it should have been rated "R", rather than "PG-13".
The plot:
This child's psychiatrist (Malcolm) and his wife are reaping the benefits of an awards banquet for Malcolm (Bruce Willis). They are enjoying a glass of fine wine and decide to head up to the bedroom to celebrate <wink>. They find someone had broken into their home and was in their bathroom. A patient was seeking revenge from his psychiatrist from childhood. The good doctor could not help the boy, and as a man, the patient decided to seek revenge. He then shot the doctor, and proceeded to turn the gun on himself. The doctor then takes on a similar case with a 9-year-old boy, Cole (Haley Joel Osment). As the movie goes on, the child is won over by the psychiatrist affections and trust is won. The child sees ghosts of dead people and is haunted by them day and night. He eventually tells the doctor. Odd paranormal happenings occur when the kid is being haunted, and being all of nine-years-old, he is scared to death of what he sees. Basically, every haunting is of some gruesome dead person. The psychologist helps him deal with his demons and in return Cole helps Malcolm with his failing marriage.
Ok now for the ending. No I am not going to tell you the ending, but this ending is exactly why I wanted to write this epinion. I am the type of person who can guess about 75% of all book and movie endings. I am not very surprised when I finish a movie or a book. THIS movie was the exception. The last 10 minutes of the movie take an enormous twist and the reason for Malcolm failed marriage is revealed, and is nothing short of brilliant. I really thought the end of the movie was going to be Malcolm curing, or helping Cole deal with his demons, and helping him learn to talk to them. This is not the case at all. If you never considered seeing this movie, I highly recommend it for the ending alone. I promise you will leave the movie wondering how you could not have seen it coming. I know I did.
