Author's Review
The Simpsons...
The words are the epitome of laughter to millions of people around the world, as they escape into clouds and are replaced by the one and a half minute sequence we all know and love. The three-disc complete first season of The Simpsons was quickly the best selling TV-Based DVD ever, and for good reason; the first great (though slightly awkward) thirteen episodes of The Simpsons to view at anytime anywhere. What could be better? How about a four-disc's chock-full of all twenty-two episodes of the second (and closer to perfection) season? Yeah, I think that calls for a purchase.
The second season is a great one, much better than the first in terms of humor and quality. For those unfamiliar with the first season, the voices were off, at least to what we today know and love, the animation was jagged, and the colors were very odd in some places, again in comparison to what we know and love today. Needless to say, the animation is much better this time around, and the voices have gotten much more grounded; except for Homer. Some of the episodes still have an odd-sounding Homer. There are also more episodes compared to the limited thirteen in the first season. So, if your in a pickle and dont have eight some-odd dollars, this collection is definately more laugh for your dollar.
So you want more than twenty-two episodes? Why of course there's more! This is the amazing world of DVD, you greedy monster, you! There are hilarious and informative commentaries on every episode, two music videos with commentary, a recording (albeit a pretty mediocre one) of Bart presenting an American Music Award, a recording of the Simpsons getting an Emmy Award, a few featurettes on the show, and three Butterfinger commercials. Even after the eleven hours you sit watching all twenty-two episodes of The Simpsons Complete Second Season, you have much to do and watch.
Last but not least, the presentation of the product is hilarious and a clever little joke at that. It's even integrated into the DVD menu itself. You see, on each of the four discs, there is a body of one of the four stars from The Simpsons, with each portrait of them headless, there neck extending in the edge of the DVD. Now here's the cool part. There are four heads of various characters on around each of the DVDs. One of the character represented on the DVD and three others. Basically, you can rotate the DVD in its casing to match the body with the different heads. It sounds weird in writing but when seen it's a gag all its own.
Thumbs up to the entire cast and crew at The Simpsons for making one of the most entertaining experiences this side of Springfield, and for finally realizing how happy they could make us hungry fans (not to mention how much money they could make) by releasing season by season on DVD. Now, if only they'd come out quicker.
Now, I'm not going to write the synopsis of every episode and explain them, but I'm going to say this much. Buy this DVD if you like The Simpsons, Animation, TV, Life, and/or any of the various species of Monkey.
