Author's Review
After a long wait, The Simpsons have come to digital video with their complete first season on DVD. The first season of The Simpsons was a time when the writers were developing the characters, the artists were creating Springfield, and the actors were establishing the voices. Because of this, the first season is very different from the other seasons because it was a time of change. Smithers was black, Milhouse had black hair, and Homer's voice was completely different. But all these changes just make the first season even more exciting to watch.
The picture quality in The Simpsons: Complete First Season is an incredible upgrade from the original quality. The lines are smooth and the animation is much less choppy. Also, the sound quality is much improved. Although many of the characters sound much different than they do now, the sound on this DVD is crisp and smooth.
There are a cornucopia of extras in this 3-disc set.
Every episode includes commentary by Matt Groening and the directors and writers of the show. The commentary is great because it provides a look at what was going on behind the scenes and allows you to understand many of the jokes and what inspired them. If you are a trivia fanatic, the commentary is right up your alley. Also included, are the original scripts for Bart the Genius, Bart the General, Moaning Lisa, and the never-aired Some Enchanted Evening. The scripts are even better because they include the handwritten notes by Matt Graening. Also, there are early sketches of the original characters on the Tracey Ulman Show and a clip from the show. There are never-before-seen outtakes, the complete episode of Some Enchanted Evening, clips from the Simpsons in foreign languages, and so much more. You can also find, hidden, magazine covers and a news story about the Bart T-Shirt controversy. The amount of extras is amazing and easily makes the set worth the price.
The Simpsons' social satire shaped a generation and continues to amuse millions. The Simpsons: The Complete First Season documents the creation and development of this historic show and is a definite must for anyone who enjoys its humor.
