Maybe Me and Wes Anderson Should Just Avoid Each Other

Date of Review:  Dec 28, 2001
The Bottom Line: The Royal Tenenbaums is highly overrated. Don't believe the critical hype, no matter how much you want to.
Review: At this point, I think it best that me and director Wes Anderson avoid each other. A couple of years ago, as critics and everyone else was on their knees to this guy for his film Rushmore, I was dumbfounded by it's critical glory. It wasn't very...

The nearly brilliant Tenenbaums...

Date of Review:  Jan 5, 2002
The Bottom Line: If you like witty and intelligent comedy, this film is for you!
Review: The Royal Tenenbaums is just about brilliant. Besides the wonderful performances, it's intelligent and witty script make this film shine.

Here's the quirky story: When Royal Tenenbaum (Hackman) announces that he's dying, a dysfunctional...

A Royal Rental

Date of Review:  Jan 6, 2002
The Bottom Line: On a 10-point scale, it's a 6.5. A dark comedy with too many underdeveloped characters might leave you saying "so what?"
Review: I hate nothing more than seeing really cool previews for a movie, with big-named actors, and great reviews to boot like "Best Movie of the Year" - then going to actually see the movie and finding out that you've been moderately mislead.

As...

A Royal Reunion

Date of Review:  Jan 7, 2002
The Bottom Line: A bittersweet family comedy-drama with a great ensemble cast. Heartfelt and hilarious with much insight and many complexities. One of the year's best.
Review: If Bottle Rocket was a stylish name-maker for director Wes Anderson and Rushmore was a complete proof of his talents, then The Royal Tenenbaums simply reinforces Anderson?s role as a cutting-edge young director. With Tenenbaums, Anderson maintains...

We Were Amused

Date of Review:  Feb 7, 2002
The Bottom Line: Wes Anderson serves up another quirky slice of life comedy anchored by stellar performances from a talented cast.
Review: My apologies for my prolonged absence from all of my hordes of fans who are breathless with anticipation at my every professional move. This is the first day they've let me have web access. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me go back to where I...

Family Matters

Date of Review:  Jan 27, 2002
The Bottom Line: A twisted, offbeat, belabored look at the dark side of the imperfect family, done without shocking or depressing us
Review: If Kevin Smith is Hollywood?s resident smart aleck, and Darren Aronofsky, its dark visionary, then Wes Anderson (along with writing partner Owen) is it?s cerebral humorist. With the Royal Tenenbaums, Anderson has created a sometimes tedious, but...

Royal Tenenbaums

Date of Review:  Jul 24, 2002
The Bottom Line: Not a very good movie, but worth watching for the cast. Their performance was the best I've seen in a long time.
Review: Everything about The Royal Tenenbaums was wonderful, but the story. It had a great cast, great acting, great setting, and then the movie started. The Royal Tenenbaums was possibly the longest two hours of my life. It was boring and seemed to never...

Date of Review:  Jan 5, 2002
The Bottom Line: Well made. Funny yet dark(-ish). If you liked Rushmore you will like this movie.
Review: The movies was a well written and well directed movie. The director was the director for Rushmore so you might know the similarity.
I saw this movie with quite a few people in the audience. I noticed that there was quite a few laughts...

Wes Anderson's Tenenbaums: Oh, for quirk's sake!

Date of Review:  Jan 20, 2002
The Bottom Line: A love poem to dysfunction, The Royal Tenenbaums is unlike anything else to hit the cineplex this year.
Review: Divorce. Suicide. Incest. Failure and disappointment.

Welcome to the funny world of Wes Anderson. The writer-director delivers a fractured family fairy tale which is either the funniest sad movie of the year or the saddest funny one?I...

Wes Anderson scores again (too bad Oscar didn't think so)

Date of Review:  Jun 5, 2002
The Bottom Line: You've heard about the genius of Wes Anderson, so try this movie, his most accessible due to its well-known and extremely talented cast.
Review: Let me start by setting the record straight: I adore Owen Wilson. I think that may shed some light on the reasoning behind this glowing review. I saw this movie in January with may parents and sister. It was one of the rare times that I get to...
