Wes Anderson's Tenenbaums: Oh, for quirk's sake!

Date of Review:  Jan 20, 2002
The Bottom Line: A love poem to dysfunction, The Royal Tenenbaums is unlike anything else to hit the cineplex this year.
Review: Divorce. Suicide. Incest. Failure and disappointment.

Welcome to the funny world of Wes Anderson. The writer-director delivers a fractured family fairy tale which is either the funniest sad movie of the year or the saddest funny one?I...

Family isn't a word. It's a sentence. My praise takes up several paragraphs.

Date of Review:  Dec 14, 2001
The Bottom Line: For those weary of the sitcom style of comedy filmmaking so prevalent these days, The Royal Tenenbaums will be nothing short of a revelation.
Review: Boasting an exemplary ensemble cast and a master?s visual stroke, The Royal Tenenbaums is more than Anderson?s finest movie yet; it?s easily one of this year?s best (and most entertaining) films. Few filmmakers have the ability to deliver dark (or...

The Royal Tenenbaums: a dysfunctional family and film that tries too hard.

Date of Review:  Nov 19, 2002
The Bottom Line: Just barely four stars, and I'm being charitable. Quirky, but mean spirited, and worth only watching once.
Review: I really wanted to like this movie.

Now that I've managed to say that, I'm going to toss in a caveat. It's a film that could have been a great film, but for one thing. The main character is such a louse and loser that any bit of sympathy...

NO ROYALTY WHATSOEVER

Date of Review:  Jan 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: This is a hard movie to rate. Packed with excellent actors, I personally found it lacking in everything. All I can say is that it was Bizarre.
Review: I don?t know if it takes good acting to make a movie appear stupid, of if this was just a stupid movie, but I kept waiting and waiting for it to get better, and it didn?t.

Movies about dysfunctional families seem to catch the public?s eye...

The Magnificent Tenenbaums

Date of Review:  Jan 15, 2002
The Bottom Line: The Royal Tenenbaums is a literate and loving look at balancing work and play. One of the best pictures of 2001.
Review: Seldom have I seen a comedy with the underlying current of sadness found in Wes Anderson?s latest film, ?The Royal Tenenbaums.? The Tenenbaum family, brilliant as they may be, is emotionally dysfunctional. The Tenenbaum patriarch, Royal Tenenbaum...

Wes Anderson's -The Royal Tenenbaums-2001-They Peaked Early

Date of Review:  Aug 16, 2002
The Bottom Line: This is an entertaining comedy, from a relatively young filmmaker, Wes Anderson. It's a whole new film style, and fun.
Review: This has got to be one of the strangest comedies I?ve seen in the past few years. It is very funny, although decidedly odd. While all the characters in this flick have life created with brilliant brush strokes, like a series of snapshots that define...

We Were Amused

Date of Review:  Feb 7, 2002
The Bottom Line: Wes Anderson serves up another quirky slice of life comedy anchored by stellar performances from a talented cast.
Review: My apologies for my prolonged absence from all of my hordes of fans who are breathless with anticipation at my every professional move. This is the first day they've let me have web access. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me go back to where I...

I Don't Think You're An *sshole Royal but Kind of a Son of a B*tch

Date of Review:  Oct 6, 2004
The Bottom Line: The Royal Tenenbaums is a Quirky, Complex Film of Hilarity & Sentimentality from Wes Anderson Helmed by a Great Cast.
Review:
Since arriving onto the independent film scene in 1995 with the quirky caper film Bottle Rocket, Austin, Texas filmmaker Wes Anderson has been known for his hilarious, sentimental views on the world and life in general. Co-written with actor...

The Family Where Quirkiness Is King

Date of Review:  Apr 6, 2004
The Bottom Line: Those Baby Genius kids have grown up and have become dysfunctional. Sort of.
Review: Director Wes Anderson has made quite a name for himself: opens with the critically-acclaimed Bottle Rocket (which I haven't seen), follows with the bigger budget Rushmore, and manages to stay quirky and creative, while retaining a sense of warmth...
