Product Review

Fang-tastic (sorry it's a bad joke!)

by   babygirluk ,   Oct 31, 2002

Pros:  Very entertaining, stylish, just very enjoyable.

Cons:  Special effects could have been better.

The Bottom Line:  Not to everyone's taste but I and everyone else I know who've seen it thoroughly enjoyed it. Hip-hop/Anne Rice fans may be disappointed.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Firstly I like to say that I am a huge Aaliyah fan (my username kinda gives that away already) but many Aaliyah fans might be disappointed with the film.
1.Although a main character she doesn't have much screen time.
2.Theres a lot of rock/metal music in the film & no hip-hop or r&b whatsoever!

Now that's out the way I'll tell you why despite this I still enjoyed the film.

Having never read any of Anne Rice's novels I came to the film fresh not knowing pretty much any of the storyline, but found it very easy to follow even though multiple narratives and flash backs are used. I found the story refreshing from most films of the same genre as it is more about the Vampire's point of view rather than mortals who are being chased by them & because I've never read the books I didn't notice any changes in story, but in my opinion to do a straight adaptation with no change is pointless because you may aswell read the book.

There have been a lot of bad reviews about this film complaining about script, dialogue etc. but personally I found myself so absorbed I didn't notice any faults in might contain. I went to see it with my cousin (another Aaliyah fan) and we enjoyed it so much we wanted to see it again. We were literally squealing in the aisles at the scene where Aaliyah rips out this guy's still beating heart, eats it then squashes it. That scene itself is worth watching the film for & I can honestly not think of any of Aaliyah's contemporaries doing a better job or pulling it off. Eventhough the film is full of rock music which I've never liked I think it really enhances the mood of the film. We even found ourselves nodding our heads along and enjoying it.

I now own the film on video because I liked it so much but like most action films it is best viewed on the big screen. It's a little strange to see Aaliyah a 22 year old r&b singer play the Queen of all vampires and I think it took me a minute to differentiate the two but my dad (not a particular fan) had no problem and said that you didn't think about her as Aaliyah.

Stuart Townsend's performance was excellent and he really drives the film. I've never seen him in anything before but he played his role confidently and was very convincing. Also his accent never slipped once which is quite rare in hollywood films. I think there were good performances all round and I also enjoyed the actor who played Marius. I think it was very well cast although I think they could've found a better Jessie.

I definately recommend this film although it won't be to everyone's taste. The Lost Boys is one of my favourite films and its sort of along those lines both saying that youth and Vampires are sexy. Its not as moralistic as most horrors and I enjoyed it much more than Interview With The Vampire which I found almost like torture to watch so I am glad that although it's called a sequel there is no continuity.
