You Don't Need Voices To Be Thrilled...

by   Soifeas ,  Mar 24, 2000
Pros: horror movie fans will love this oldie but goodie
Cons: none
Review: The classic silent horror film The Phantom of the Opera stars Nelson Eddy, Susanna Foster, Claude Rains & Edgar Barrier. Directed by Arthur Lubin and produced by George Waggner in 1943.

Enrique Claudin (Claude Rains), an...

A movie to watch and to be remembered

by   eveliosierra ,  May 11, 2005
Pros: Great taste, beautiful colors, wonderful acting and superb singing.
Cons: I wish it would last longer.
Review: I was very happy when I bought this movie (VHS format) several years ago. I saw this beautiful movie many years ago and enjoyed watching it over and over especially the wonderful singing of soprano Susanna Foster and baritone Nelson Eddy. I wish to get a ...

Handsome repackaging of a classic

by   mjgolden ,  Dec 27, 2000
Pros: A true classic of the genre
Cons: A little dated and slow paced at times
Review: This movie bears little (make that no) resemblance to the original Gaston Leroux novel, and precious little resemblance to the original, Lon Chaney silent version. It has been criticized as too much Opera and not enough Phantom.

But what the...

An Opera movie with a lingering Phantom of being a horror

by   flash-hammer ,  Dec 13, 2006
Pros: The sets, if you like Opera you may like it
Cons: I don't like Opera
The Bottom Line: Fans of the story, and Opera, will probably appreciate it, although this film places more emphasis on the Opera part of the title than it does the Phantom one.
Review: When I purchased a Universal Monsters box-set around January 2005, I was initially quite disappointed that the version of The Phantom of the Opera included was not the 1925 silent version, which sported the now immortal make-up job on Lon Chaney ...

The Second Of Many

by   phantomd4 ,  Oct 3, 2005
Pros: lush opera scenes, wonderful music, much talent
Cons: confusing,too much humor,
Review: I think that the understandibility of the movie disappears when Claudin falsely beileves the publisher is stealing his life's work. It would have been much more understandable if the publisher really was stealing it because then it turns Claudin into a ...

The First Phantom in Color

by   finlandrules ,  Aug 17, 2003
Pros: Claude Rains, great use of Technicolor camera.
Cons: Too many and too long opera sequences, the end part of the film.
The Bottom Line: The phantom's mystique is missing in this often dull film. I would recommend you to watch the 1925 version instead.
Review: The 1943 version of Phantom of the Opera was the second Technicolor film Universal made, and ...
