Product Review

Van Damme did it again. He made a horrible film.

by   seb! ,   Jul 15, 2002

Pros:  some cool flying kicks

Cons:  everything else

The Bottom Line:  A terrible film.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

After seeing van Dammes "The Replicant" I had some hope for a serious comback. After seeing "The order" all my hope was gone.Van Damme simply did it again,he made a horrible movie.

First of all.The plot is all about Rudy,a thief. It's the typical van Damme part you'd expect him to play.Rudy's dad gets kidnapped by fanatics in Israel.Rudy goes to Israel to save his dad, with the help of a female police officer(Sophia Milos). They discover that Rudy's dad is being held by a group of religious freaks called The Order. They are led by a guy called Cyrus(Brian Thompson-"Mortal Combat 2")
He wants to blow up the city of Jeruzalem.
Rudy must stop Cyrus, avoid WWIII and save his dad.

Trust me,I'm also a van Damme fan,but "The order" is horrible in every way.The plot isn't great, but that isn't why you watch a van Damme movie. But I must say somewhere: He's made better movies, with better plots(Time cop,Double Impact, even Replicant).Dough there's one big "mysterie".The film is directed by Sheldon Lettich. He and van Damme teamed up a couple of times earlier, and made great van Damme classics(Lionheart,Double Impact). But "the order" is just complete crap.
First of all,the acting is horrible.More than horrible.Van Damme isn't a great actor, but his lines in this film are really, really laughable. That's not the biggest problem. He's got a terrible supporting cast.Sophia Milos plays a really stereotype female inspector.Even pornstars act better than she does. Her Israeli accent is of fakest quality possible, and some times she even speaks English and Israeli at the same time.
Brian Thompson, who plays bad guy Cyrus,is most horrible. His lines are so incredibly stupid: "You can't stop the prophesy" bla bla.He act routine(check out mortal combat 2)and the way he moves, walks talks, shows he's nothing more than a wooden-puppet kinda actor.(you know he even gives acting-lessons!!!)
The fact that Charlton Heston has a big part in this film,is a nasty lie.
Heston appears for about three lousy minutes...

The action in the film is way over the top,bad camera-vieuws,etc.It's more stupid than a chase-scene in baywatc-series.There's one or two cool action scenes(Mongolia from the quest returns). But besides some flying-kick this film doesn't deliver.A way too fake explosion at the end,and a terribly stupid sword-fight scene are the ultimate spoilers.
Guys, even if you love van Damme, admire him,AVOID THIS FILM AT ALL COSTS.
