Best Political Magazine

by   pm577 ,  Nov 11, 2002
Pros: Packed with opinions and few ads
Cons: Bit too much culture and book reviews
The Bottom Line: Read The New Republic if you want great bias opinions, only for those who can handle it. Not meant to be browsed!
Review: Some will complain that the New Republic has too much of a bias. Well, maybe you don't understand, but that's WHY you read opinion! The New Republic sometimes is unfair, but that's what makes this such a great magazine, it's real opinions, and they don't...

A Must Read For Those Who Follow Washington

by   creekcat ,  Apr 2, 2003
Pros: Updates on current affairs and policies. Insightful and trend-setting articles and columns.
Cons: Limited Editorial Range in Content (still it's not simply liberal or conservative --but a hybrid)
The Bottom Line: A Must-Read For The Political Junkie. If you read the magazine, you'll be the one offering the best opinion at all those parties.
Review: Why Read The New Republic? -
If it's an up-and-coming political story, you'll probably read it in 'The New Republic' (TNR) first. Not only does it report the ever-changing policies of the Washington-Set, its writers recognize the subtleties and...

What liberal bias?

by   jholman56 ,  May 23, 2001
Pros: The 21st century periodical version of Voltaire
Cons: Very snide--but sometimes this is a pro.
The Bottom Line: Unbiased political commentary with a razor sharp edge. A very enjoyable way to follow American politics.
Review: TNR provides sharp, biting, but overall witty and engaging commentary. For those who claim a liberal bias, this registered Republican questions if they have ever read any of the scathing pieces on the moral failings of former President Clinton, or the...

The New Republic: The Left Side of the Fence Weighs In

by   buffoonery ,  Jun 18, 2007
Pros: Good writing and analysis from the left
Cons: Won't convince anyone; often trips over its own biases
The Bottom Line: TNR is a weekly magazine of left-wing politics and economics. Liberals will like its views, conservative will hoot but need to read them anyway.
Review: The New Republic is one of the nation’s foremost magazines of liberal opinion. Published more-or-less weekly (44 issues a year at $40 an annual subscription), this 36-page publication contains a wide range of articles on politics, economics, ...

Digestible liberal opinion without any fluff

by   azumpano ,  Feb 2, 2000
Pros: Still a heavyweight contender in the political ring; exhaustive book reviews
Cons: Few illustrations/photos; heavy pro-Gore bias
Review: If you want to go beyond the watered-down political discourse you'll find in Time or Newsweek, then the New Republic is a good place to start. The writing is concise and thorough (at the risk of sounding like a contradiction), and you don't need to be...

America's Best Political Magazine

by   jlr29 ,  Jun 10, 2002
Pros: A diversity of opinions
Cons: Some editorial biases
The Bottom Line: It's not perfect, but every issue has at least a couple of fascinating and important articles.
Review: Here's my breakdown of the current events magazines: "Newsweek" and "Time" are good introductions to issues but don't go into enough detail. The purely political magazines are ideological spin, for the most part: "National Review", "Weekly Standard", ...

Still Good, But Inconsistent

by   DSiegel597 ,  Dec 21, 1999
Pros: Thought provoking, well written
Cons: New look is "unusual"; political philosophy inconsistent
Review: The New Republic has always been a bastion of liberal intellectual political thought. Over the past few years it has undergone some clear philosophical editorial changes, and now varies its commentaries from liberal to conservative, and the views are not...

Liberal but not too liberal

by   teengop ,  May 3, 2000
Pros: decent articles, factual
Cons: liberal bias
Review: My American Government teacher put this magazine as part of his class this year. I thought, "Oh great, just another liberal teacher imposing liberal thoughts on us." As a conservative, I was wondering if there was any hope for the future of our...

Mainstream Liberalism for those without radical Extropianism

by   molecule ,  May 3, 2000
Pros: ...liberal...
Cons: ..dull enough to be conservative... and not radical in style or substance.
Review: Bland is a nice word for the New Republic. Lacking the intelligence, style, or even interest of the Nation, the flash of scientific rationalism of Extropy or New Scientist, the energy of Earth First!ers, or the thought of Academia, this reads like the...

For the pretentious 21 year olds in your life

by   superstah ,  Apr 13, 2008
Pros: conservatives should read to become more conservative
Cons: snarky, snide and smug
The Bottom Line: There's plenty of better written magazines out there.
Review: I recently subscribed to the New Republic because I wanted more analysis of the news. You get about 4 pages of that, albeit in a very snarky and snide manner. The rest of the magazine is all about the staff patting themselves on their back for being so ...
