A short story teaching the merits of individualism told by a master of children's verse!

Shel Silverstein, who I first heard of as the writer behind the Johnny Cash hit song, 'A Boy named Sue', later became a well known and widely respected poet and author of children's books. His recent death is a loss to children everywhere.

This particular story, is a quest by a 'less than complete circle' for his 'missing piece' . After many trials and failures, he finally finds the piece that fits perfectly; only to find that it didn't make him happy after all. He learns that he is significant on his own and doesn't need anyone else to make him whole.

For those adults, like me, who have found their real 'missing piece' that makes them whole, the lesson may seem a bit off. But the story is aimed at young children. Teaching them individualism is a good thing.

This is a lesson many adults never learn. If your not happy with yourself, you won't be happy with someone else either.
