Jesus was a Carpenter: Last Temptation of Christ

by   George_Chabot , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Apr 4, 2002
Pros: Script, Direction, Dafoe, Hershey, Keitel, Score
Cons: Bad mouthed by people who either haven't 1) seen it, or 2) understood it
The Bottom Line: See it and realize the controversy was all in their minds!
Review: Every once in a while I like to watch a good religious movie, you know, one about the life of Jesus Christ. One of the ones I continually recommend is Jesus of Nazareth, a massive 6-hour plus work that does one of the best jobs of depicting...

Martin Scorsese’s Raging Christ

by   Grouch , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Aug 30, 2001
Pros: Dafoe's brilliant; score haunts; Scorsese creates a world so real you can smell the blood
Cons: A doubting Jesus may make viewers squirm (but it's all in the name of allegory)
The Bottom Line: Scorsese's Passion Play deserves the audience it never got when it was first released. This is powerful filmmaking and is sure to strike a nerve in believers and non-believers alike.
Review: Jesus Christ as allegory? Turn the Son of Man into the Son of Metaphor? The idea strikes a nerve as deep as the thought of re-telling Gone With the Wind from a slave’s perspective.

You’ve got to admit, Martin Scorsese had a lot of...

The Last Temptation of Christ: Scorsese's Controversial Masterpiece

by   brendan2 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Feb 27, 2004
Pros: Great direction, excellent performances (especially Dafoe's), offers a different variation on the Christ story
Cons: Many people will stay away because of the controversy
The Bottom Line: An underrated Scorsese film with a different view of Christ.
Review: Note: This is a rewrite of a review I originally posted way back on November 13, 2000. I decided to rewrite it because the original was pretty horrible and because the release of T he Passion of the Christ made ...

Don't Be Afraid of This Temptation

by   JustCathy ,  Apr 8, 2000
Pros: Excellent Directing and Cinematography, A Piece of American History
Cons: None that I can think of...
Review: I remember when this movie first came out in 1988. I was living in San Diego at the time, and there was much controversy about this film. We went to the theatres to see it and there was a large crowd outside picketing the showing of this film. There...

The Cross and Everything After

by   BaronSamedi3 ,  Feb 1, 2009
Pros: An unwavering portrayal of the human side of Jesus
Cons: Doubtful it will cause those who deny that side of him to think
The Bottom Line: Do you think maybe the point of God coming to Earth was to show that he doesn't offend as easily as his followers would like to believe?
Review: It occurs to me as I write this that I don't ever recall the Jesus of the Gospels so much as implying his own perfection. Christians say God is a triune god consisting of the father, the son, and the holy spirit. Or to put it more succinctly, god, man, ...

The Greatest Story Ever Told! A Masterpiece.

by   ninput ,  Apr 25, 2005
Pros: Dafoe, Keitel, Scorsese, brilliant plot, brilliant score, unbelievably moving and powerful
Cons: I don't have a copy oof my own yet!
The Bottom Line: So much better than any other religious film, it's a shame it is not better known. A work of genius in every respect.
Review: Every now and again, a film you never really ever thought of will come up, slap you in the face, and remind you why you love movies so much. Most of these times you never gave these films a second thought before that, picking them up just out of idle ...

In the name of LOVE

by   foxy_shy ,  Apr 18, 2003
Pros: Perhaps the best film about Christ ever made
Cons: Not everyone will see it, furthermore, even less people will try to understand
The Bottom Line: One of my favorite movies.
Review: Good Friday… it probably was called so for a purpose.

I’ve been waiting for an occasion to review this film. Today feels like a perfect day for that. You might have heard about this one - one of my all time favorite movies

IT IS ACCOMPLISHED!!!

by   captain_canada ,  May 11, 2005
Pros: A masterpiece! Well directed, well acted, well made, well scripted.....the list goes on.
Cons: Holy-rollers might be offended by the strong fictional aspect of the movie
The Bottom Line: I would definately recommend this movie. This film is God.......or should I say the son of God.
Review: I have seen several video adaptations of the life of Jesus Christ: "The Greatest Story Ever Told" *yawn*, "The Passion of the Christ" *puke*, even the musical hit "Jesus Christ Superstar". After seeing all of these, I can clearly say that Martin ...

Do Not Resist the Temptation!

by   SniperHockey ,  Mar 7, 2004
Pros: epic film with modern-day themes; inspirational, moving, and visually captivating
Cons: doesn't always capture the realism needed for a historical movie from this particular time period
The Bottom Line: This is a film that doesn't require you to be religious in order to find value in it.
Review: Ah...It's good to be back on good ol' Epinions.com. Oh, how I've missed you! With all the hype and hoopla surrounding Mel Gibson's recent adaptation on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, I thought I would take a step back and review one of my all-time ...

The Mean Streets of Jerusalem

by   jeffcoffy ,  Sep 8, 2000
Pros: brilliant direction by Scorsese
Cons: the casting of Hollywood stars
Review: Now that twelve years have passed, most people have probably forgotten the uproar around Martin Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ" (1988). And for those of us who have seen and love the film, the uproar didn't make any sense in the...
