The Last Tom Cruise Samurai Movie

Date of Review:  Jan 24, 2004
The Bottom Line: An unknown actor in the lead role would have left a better focus on the film and it's other characters.
Review: Borrowing from the very fabric of James Clavell's Shogun and Dances With Wolves, we the audience are introduced to Civil War Captain Tom Cruise (known as "Nathan" in this movie). Somehow he became a hero after slaughtering an innocent village of...

Cruise film romanticizes warriors, weakly.

Date of Review:  Dec 15, 2003
The Bottom Line: As an entertainment, I found "The Last Samurai" uneven, but possibly adequate if you're interested in acting talent from Japan. Otherwise, narrative technique is poor, and historians will be appalled!
Review: SPOILERS, of course. I don't want to tell you what you should or should not see. This opinion is intended more for someone who's seen the film and wonders what others thought about it....

First off, "The Last Samurai" is obviously based on...

Please give me an Oscar! Love, Tom Cruise

Date of Review:  Jan 23, 2004
The Bottom Line: Potentially offensive racial questions, contrivance and melodrama are overcome by the sheer entertainment value.
Review: Tom Cruise has been a star for decades, but I've never understood why. I didn't dislike him, but I felt immune to his charisma and charm for so many years. So phony, so precious, so very earnest. You just wanted to pat him on the head and say, "Good...

OMG! I did I did, I did see Tom Cruise!

Date of Review:  Dec 20, 2003
The Bottom Line: Even if it was R, bring your 13 and older family and friends along for an epic adventure that will make you laugh and cry, something for everyone . .
Review: Captian Nathan Algren played by Multi Award Winner Tom Cruise caught himself in a inner struggle with race and culture. The struggle is between two great eras that are ready to rumble, now Cruise find himself in the beginning of the movie as a laid...

The Last Caucasian. (Lean-N-Mean 2 W/O)

Date of Review:  Dec 17, 2003
The Bottom Line: Featuring great themes, it is very well done, but a few flaws prevent it from attaining greatness.
Review: In my high school writing class, I was told that when writing a paper I should do tell the reader what I was going to say, say it, and then explain what I said. While that is an excellent primer for the written word, the method doesn't translate as...

Both Hollywood and relatively accurate, fancy that!

Date of Review:  Jan 30, 2004
The Bottom Line: A great film for anyone who likes either action or samurai. Will not disappoint.
Review: Usually once Hollywood attaches itself to a film the story and history messes up and the film degenerates to a mess of pyrotechnics or computer trickery.

I was pleasantly surprised by The Last Samurai. I expected the film to be a Hollywood...

The Last Samurai

Date of Review:  Dec 11, 2003
The Bottom Line: The Last Samurai is a wonderful and smart action movie staying true overall to its purpose. This may very well be Tom Cruise's best movie.
Review: The Last Samurai is the story of two warriors who fight for different causes yet are united in their sense of honor, duty, and glory. It depicts the struggles of late nineteenth century Japan. The country is struggling with the dilemma of losing her...

Simply the best epic swordfight film since 'Gladiator'.

Date of Review:  Jan 31, 2004
The Bottom Line: Tom Cruise if finally well cast again in this exciting bid budget Samurai story...
Review: I start this review with the fact that Tom Cruise never was any of my favourite actors. In fact at times the guys face irritated me. The last couple of years I think Cruise has made quite a few disappointing films aswell. To start with the terribly...

The Last Rip-Off

Date of Review:  Dec 7, 2003
The Bottom Line: It's disguised as Amadeus, but it's really Manos- The Hands of Fate
Review: Premise- Tom Cruise stars as a frontier captain that's down on his life. So he tries to sell new Winchester rifles by shooting at people. He is recruited by the Emperor of Japan to fight against the rebellion of samurais. So Cruise trains the...

Bushido Blade

Date of Review:  Nov 30, 2003
The Bottom Line: Everything about this film is beautiful and I would go as far as to rank it one of the year?s best films.
Review: Admittedly, I was concerned about this film beforehand. While I think Tom Cruise is one of the best mega-star actors Hollywood has to offer, I was concerned that The Last Samurai could do for him what Braveheart did for Mel Gibson and Gladiator did...
