Which Quote Do I Use?

by   LRGuis ,  Jul 2, 2001
Pros: I'm picking out a thermos for you...It's these cans..he hates these cans
Cons: Bernadette Peters gets a little annoying, a bit slow in the middle
The Bottom Line: True comedy is found in the lines and their delivery. This relies on Steve Martin and he delivers wonderfully.
Review: This truly comical classic of the 70's (just barely: 1979) still brings tears to my eyes. Good tears, of course. The kind that come as a result of belly-aching laughter and constant smiling. There aren't many movies that deliver this relatively...

I was born a poor black child...

by   whyterabbit79 ,  May 28, 2008
Pros: HAS IT ALL – COMEDY, ROMANCE, ACTION, FIGHT SCENES, SOCIAL-POLITICAL COMMENTARY!
Cons: Steve Martin's annoying drunk voice sucks - that's the only bad thing!
The Bottom Line: This is just a great, funny film. Definitely worth watching - very stupid and amusing.
Review: I love this movie - my Dad and I watched it a million times when I was a kid. I bought the 26th anniversary DVD as soon as I realized it existed. The opening scene shows us Steve Martin as a dirty, haggard bum. He tells us “I am not a bum – ...

Steve Martin's Funniest Role

by   mengladys ,  Jul 3, 2001
Pros: Pure comedy. "The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here!"
Cons: Some adult language. The dog in this movie deserved an Oscar.
The Bottom Line: A comedy classic. Steve Martin at his best. It has family, racial harmony, romance, a cute dog, and motorcycles.
Review: Steve Martin plays the irrepressible Navin Johnson. He was raised by a black family down south. There is a scene where Navin is singing with his all black family and sadly was the only one who couldn't clap on the beat.

On Navin's birthday,...

The Jerk

by   Jeffacka ,  Apr 22, 2000
Pros: Funny, amusing, gets you in a good mood.
Cons: Childish, immature, unrealistic.
Review: I have seen this movie several times. For years The Jerk has been my favorite movie. Anyone should be able to see the humor in this hilarious picture.

Steve Martin was absolutely fantastic. No other person could have played the part of Navin...

Steve Martin's genius! Laughs and laughs

by   iron44eagle ,  Mar 17, 2007
Pros: One of Steve Martin's best works, excellent replay value
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: One of the all time best comedies, a must see! So many laughs!
Review: The Jerk is simply Steve Martin at his best. No matter how many times I watch this film I am always laughing. This is one of the best comedies ever! There are so many great scenes in this film it seems everyone who has seen it has different favorites. ...

The Jerk - One of the Funniest EVER!

by   melindad123 ,  Jul 13, 2008
Pros: Everything!
Cons: Zero!
The Bottom Line: One of the funniest movies ever to hit the screen!
Review: This has got to be one of my favorite movies of all time. A true rags-to-riches-to-rags tale, this gem of a film, directed by Carl Reiner, is entertaining from beginning to end. The story, written by Steve Martin and Carl Gottlieb, stars Steve Martin ...

Huh.... my story?

by   Joti ,  Jul 3, 2000
Pros: Great, even after 10 viewings!!!
Cons: Not the success it deserved to be
Review: This is one of my all time favourite movies, made back in the late seventies when Steve Martin was the King of Stupid (in the nicest possible way).
The plot is based on him being raised by a black family only to be told on his 18th birthday that he...

A Comedy Classic

by   littlekevie ,  Apr 24, 2001
Pros: Simple yet hilarious humor.
Cons: It might be a little too silly for some.
The Bottom Line: Steve Martin is great as Navin R. Johnson and the comedy is non-stop. The Jerk is the funniest movie ever!
Review: When I first saw "The Jerk" a few years ago, I constantly found myself laughing uncontrollably. I've probably seen it at least twenty times since then and it never seems to get old. I'm always insisting that my friends watch it and they always seem to...

"Stay away from those cans!"

by   adamarket ,  Dec 12, 1999
Pros: Damn funny. Irreverent. Fun to remember and quote lines from the movie.
Cons: Little dated. Martin himself said he'd rejected the idea of remaking 'The Jerk' for the Nineties
Review: It's a little sad to reflect on how many times quotes from 'The Jerk' have crept into my daily conversation. I first saw this film around 1987 when I became an avid Steve Martin fan.

For my money, the early Rob Reiner films of Steve Martin are...

I don't need anything.... except this.......

by   kramer1084 ,  Jan 10, 2000
Pros: absolutely histarical, good for the whole family
Cons: it's a bit vulgar
Review: This is without a doubt Steve Martin's funniest and very best performance. Steve Martin plays an abandoned child that was raised by a black family. He starts working in a little fair while living in a little trailor box thing. He meets this girl and...
