Product Review

Hey Manson fans! This is the new Sh*t!!!

by   metalkid666 ,   May 19, 2003

Pros:  EVERYTHING!!! (almost...)

Cons:  Compared to Antichrist Superstar, this is a pretty average album.

The Bottom Line:  Great MM album! He tried something new and it worked wonders although I think Twiggy's departure hurt this album more than it should have.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Hey everybody! ;) (plz bear with my horrible spelling...)

I'm a 13 years old and I recently borrowed this album from my best friend who is a die-hard fan of MM like me. He was lucky enough to get his hands on it before me... Anyway, it brought a tear to my eye when I heard Marilyn Manson was coming out with a new album. I thought he was done with music once he released Holywood, the last piece of his trilogy. Although once I heard about Twiggy's departure from the band I hesitated about purchasing it. Now that I have The Golden Age of Grotesque in my Playstation it doesn't want to come out. As I listened to it the first thing I noticed was how easy it was to get into. The second thing was how much techno-influenced this album was! You will get the best idea of the album if I give you a song-by-song overview, so here it is!

1. Thaeter
(yes it's spelled that way!) This is a pretty cool intro. I enjoyed it the first couple of times I heard it but now, for the millionth time I want to throw up every time I hear it. I won't give it a rating since it's not really a song.

2. This Is The New Sh*t
I love this song! It's got a wicked chorus that drills into your mind and forces you to sing along. This is one of the catchiest songs on the album. 9/10

3. mOBSCENE
omg!!! This is my favourite song on the album! Its Manson's first video too, and for a good reason. The video is incredible and it features Manson's wife bathing in a wine cup! (who the hell would wanna miss that?) This song is especially unique because of the female choir in the background of the chorus. 10/10

4. Doll-Daga-Buzz-Buzz-Ziggety-Zag
hmmm...interesting song......umm...yeah. Pretty good but not one of my favourite on the disc. Its got real f*cked up lyrics I don't understand at all but its got something to do with toys....I think. I usually fast-forward through this one cause its missing the wicked kinda vibe of songs like mOBSENE. Don't get me wrong though, its not a bad song. 7.5/10

5. Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth
Pretty good song from what I remember. It took me a while to get into it though. You can really tell how Holy Wood influenced this song more than the others. It also doen't follow the formula of the other songs on this cd. You know, the 3 part chorus and stuff. On the album, this one sort of the odd-man-out. 7.5/10

6. The Golden Age of Grotesque
Ahhh... The title track. I like this one. It sounds alot like The Nobodies. This song's catchy cause its almost as if Marilyn Manson slurs all the lyrics. Also, it really shows his vocal range when his notes go dangerously high during the chorus. Too bad I don't what the hell he's saying. Anyone know what "SCABARET SACRILEGENDS" or "LOW ART GLOOMANITI" are????? wtf. 8.5/10

7. (s)AINT
Pretty cool song. I think its dedicated to his ex-wife what's-her-name from that show on WB called Charmed. Anyway, the "I've got the F and a C and I've got a K too, all I need is a bi*ch like U" thing is kind of getting old. Nice job though. 7.5/10

8. Ka-Boom Ka-Boom
One of my personal favourite. It's got one of the best and catchiest choruses that I've heard from Manson since the Antichrist Superstar days. If you don't have the album or you hate Manson, you should really download it from Kazaa or something cause this is really something different. 9.5/10

9. Slutgarden
Finally. I've been dieing for an acustic song. This one has pretty funny lyrics: "when I said we, you know I meant me, and when I said sweet I meant dirty hey, hey!" HAHAHAHA!!! keep em' comming! 8/10

10. Spade
Listen carefully... This is a pretty slow song but has very deep lyrics... I don't know how to say this because it came as such a big surprise it baffled me. Phew. OK. *takes a deep breath* This is my favourite Manson song. EVER. 10/10

11. Para Noir
Unique song. A bunch of w*ores listing their reasons for f*cking Manson. Some of them are pretty funny! Manson then replies to them with a pretty hard chorus. You tell them Manson! (what the HELL is he talking about?!!!) ?/10 (can't decide on a rating)

12. The Bright Young Things
I'm not trying to offend anyone but doesn't it kinda remind you of Micheal Jackson? HAHAHAHAHA!!! sorry. In this song Manson screams "we don't rebel to sell it just suits us well!" I don't know if everyone can agree with him there.... nice try though.... 8.5/10

13. Better of Two Evils
This song's to all his haters. Some people like it but this one's just not for me. Extremely average in my opinion. 6/10

14. Vodevil
Another song about sex! omg! what's up with this album? Alright though, cause it's a very good song. I like the way he sings "this isn't music and we're not a band, we're five middle fingers on a motherf*cking hand!" 8.5/10

15. Obsequey (The Death of Art)
One question. What the hell is this? I don't know, but it wraps it up nicely.
Not really a song so I'm not giving it a rating. ?/10

Well that wraps it up. Ohhh, right, the DVD. I'm not spoiling anything, but don't watch it unless you regularly sleep with a night light on. ;) The Golden Age of Grotesque is a really solid album and even if it wasn't, I'm sure true fans would buy it anyway. Marilyn Manson is a genious in the fields of music and business. I don't think Manson is a fake and that he's only in it for the money because if he was why would he pick this specific genre? Also don't bash me, This is my first official music review so bear with me. If you have any specific questions email me at slipknot_maggot_66682@hotmail.com
Anyway, please give me some tips to help my review so in the near future I can write better and more detailed reviews. I noticed that most of the reviews on this site are written by adults. I think it's also important to hear out kids' opinions on music. Manson's music has really helped me through times and maybe even saved my life a few good times so please don't bash him because if he means nothing to you, he means alot to other people. Email me if you know why Twiggy left the band. *puts head down and sobs quietly* Thanks for taking the time to read my review and please give me some tips.

I'm out, peace.
