I have had four babies and this fourth one was my first experience with a Soothie pacifier. Initially I had told the nurses not to give my baby any formula or pacifiers. However I quickly found out that baby wanted to nurse for hours! I opened the bassinet drawer and found the Soothie. I figured it was better than getting yelled at by nurses for letting him nurse for an hour at a time, so I opened it up and gave it to him.
He instantly loved it...which is different because all of my other babies, who used Nuk, took a few weeks to really and truly love a pacifier. However with the Soothie, my baby took it right away. (Freaked out a nurse since my chart still said "no pacifier" but it all worked out!).
It is made with hospital grade silicone and molded in all one piece, so its completely safe. It has two air holes on the sides, and a small little "handle" sticking out the back. Since its just a piece of silicone, its VERY easy to clean and sterilize...no water stuck in the nipple or gross things in crevices. If you look carefully, you can see that the air holes are the eyes to a little face, and the rest of the pacifier has molding to resemble a smile...and the "nuk" part resembles a nose. The holders they make go along with this theme and are the body of a penguin or other animal! (However I do not recommend the holders for reasons that should go in another review.)
I got home and tried using some Nuk pacifiers I had purchased, since my other babies liked them. This baby missed his Soothie, though...so I had to go to Walmart and purchase another set of two for around $5.
My little guy is now 6 months and he still loves these newborn soothies! I purchased the bigger size but found that they are not really "bigger"...only a heavier grade and stiffer silicone...which he doesn't care for. So he is still using the "newborn" kind, which is a bit of a softer silicone.
As a side note, you can watch your baby sucking on this pacifier, as you can see his tongue through the semi-clear silicone. Its an interesting thing to watch at first, and can attract comments from friends as this pacifier is still relatively new and not as "mainstream" as Nuk.
I recommend this pacifier for sure!
