Author's Review
Finally, something other people consider humor that I can see what is so funny about. Gary Larson is a satirist that doesn't need politics to make a great set of visual jokes.
The Larson style isn't classic artwork. The focus isn't on how well the picture is drawn or how real it looks. The focus is to look at the world from a different angle. Don't buy this one for the art, read into the humor.
The sense of humor Gary has is unique. Many people imitate his witty style now, but none with the unerring accuracy Larson has displayed for some time. As an example, in one of the most popular Larson cartoons we see a young boy with his arms full of books pushing on a door as hard as he can. The building the door leads into is labeled as a School for the Gifted. The door is clearly labeled "pull". I know that's not too funny in print, but it's another effect all together when you see it.
Deer born with bullseyes on their chests "Bummer of a birthmark Hal" to a cartoon showing the lighter side of almost any common phrase you can think of will be found in this book. There isn't a common phrase that isn't targeted, but that's not where it stops. The captions on these works will leave you laughing because most are unexpected and original to Mr. Larson.
Many of the cartoons focus on animals in reversed roles with people, animals in general, small children, and "blue haired" old ladies. Believe it or not, these can all still be very funny when exaggerated and fictionalized.
The best part, in my mind, is that even though Larson is a satirist he avoids politics. You won't see a single politically motivated cartoon that I can recall. I think highly of that because those are only funny when they are current. The cartoons in this book are nearly timeless.
If you need a quick laugh this is what you are seeking. There is very little reading involved making this just what you need when you come in from a hard day at work to lighten up and drop some stress from your shoulders. This book will remain funny for several reads, and when you have memorized it put it away. Bring it out some months later and it should be amusing again. Yes, it's that good.
