The Bottom Line: This is my favorite news magazine. It covers important world news topics and issues with thoroughness and clarity.
Review: I subscribe to a large number of magazines. Most of my subscriptions were complimentary, given to me free of charge by the publisher. Others have to be paid for and some of them have proven to be more valuable and more enjoyable than others. I change m ...

More Fun Than An Alan Greenspan Kegger!!!

by   caconti ,  Mar 30, 2001
Pros: Perfection in digestible international news.
Cons: Digs deep into few topics.
The Bottom Line: If you buy one weekly new magazine, make it The Economist!
Review: Ok, I'll admit it, your humble Epinionator is also a terrible content junkie. I will devour all information accessible to me, surfing all the main news sites daily and watching The O'Reilly Factor dogmatically. I live for news, and I believe that those...

The Reigning Champion of Newsweeklies

by   buffoonery ,  Oct 6, 2000
Pros: Unmatched coverage and depth of worldwide issues
Cons: Huh?
The Bottom Line: The Economist is the best newsmagazine in the world. Period.
Review: After over eight thousand issues, England's weekly newsmagazine The Economist retains its unchallenged title of the world’s best weekly news magazine, completely burying such second-raters as Time and Newsweek in the U.S. and ...

by   Saxguy ,  Jan 26, 2008
Pros: International perspective; securities markets coverage; timely issues
Cons: slight conservative perspective; high cost
The Bottom Line: There is nothing better when it comes to international economic news and perspective and the rest of the international news is strong as well.
Review: I've subscribed to the Economist for about 6 months now. I was always aware of the magazine as having solid economic information and a hefty subscription price. I became acquainted with the magazine in my Chiropractor's office. I saw a coupon for 6 moths ...

Not perfect, but clearly best weekly news magazine

by   polskajason ,  May 11, 2003
Pros: Common-sense, relatively balanced view on current events; well-written
Cons: British, conservative bias to many issues
The Bottom Line: Excellent weekly--read it for a rational view of what's going on in the world politically and economically.
Review: Like many of the other reviewers, I'm a big fan of the magazine. No, it's not perfect. There is that certain snide Britishness, and its pro-business/conservative bias, that many may object to, but if you're aware of it, you can take that into account...

Required Reading

by   scarmody ,  Apr 4, 2000
Pros: Willing to take a stand, Pithy
Cons: Expensive, Above-mentioned stands sometimes strain credulity
Review: It is a sign of the Economist's greatness that every decade or so a well-respected American writer (usually one from the left) feels compelled to put it down. The latest to do so was James Fallows, who identified the magazine's strong editorial stance...

Intelligent News Coverage, For a Change

by   nathantyree ,  Apr 1, 2000
Pros: Intelligent, multilevelled coverage of news
Cons: not for everyone
Review: The Economist is the only truly intelligent news magazine currently on the market. When you compare Time, Newsweek, U.S. News, and the other staples to The Economist you quickly realize that they consist of meaningless fluff, and posturing. Those...

Newsmagazine for the Intelligensia

by   jakob ,  Nov 9, 1999
Pros: Assumes that the reader is highly intelligent; has lots of data
Cons: Would bore people with average IQ or who don't care about business
Review: The Economist is a great magazine for people with a graduate degree and an IQ in the top 3% of the population. It has much more intellectual rigor than most other writing you see these days outside of academia. They will gladly show elasticity curves and...
