William H. Macy is The Cooler (2003)

Date of Review:  May 4, 2004
The Bottom Line: The Cooler is a dark, slow-moving film with some truly weird scenes, but a strange magic brews underneath it all.
Review: Ever get that feeling like you bring bad luck to all the people around you? Has it ever gotten so extreme that you actually believe if you weren't there, this stuff wouldn't be happening to them? I know that's so irrational of a thing to think, but...

What?s Cooler Than Being Cool? Getting Lucky

Date of Review:  Mar 9, 2004
The Bottom Line: Was it really necessary to show William H. Macy's bottom line?
Review: When I was in Las Vegas, the only games I played were Count the Mullets, That Waitress's Boobs: Real or Fake?, and Find the Ugliest Winner on the "Wall of Fame." These "I spy" style contests, while fun, don't exactly make money for the casinos...

Running Out Of Luck

Date of Review:  Jul 29, 2004
The Bottom Line: Bernie Lootz wants to leave Las Vegas on his own terms.
Review: Bernie Lootz has made a living changing the good luck of any gambler who comes to the Las Vegas casino where he works. Bernie (William H. Macy) is the cooler at the Shangri-La hotel casino. When hotel manager Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin) calls on...

Even the Losers, Especially Bernie Lootz, Get Lucky Sometimes

Date of Review:  Oct 22, 2004
The Bottom Line: "The Cooler" is a Lush, Evocative Film from Wayne Kramer with Winning Performances from Macy, Bello, & Baldwin. (4.5 out of 5)
Review:
One of the most respected and beloved actors in the industry, William H. Macy is a beloved character actor who always plays the loveable loser. Whether it was appearing in supporting roles for the Coen Brothers' "Fargo" and Gary Ross'...

A Bad Day To Gamble It All In Vegas

Date of Review:  Jun 9, 2004
The Bottom Line: When a casino bad luck charm falls in love, he puts himself in jeopardy with the evil casino owner.
Review: I didn't read much about "The Cooler" before I got it out. The truth is, it had William H. Macy and he has a pretty good track record with me as far as satisfying me with his performances in movies. Thus, I got out "The Cooler" and prepared myself...

THE COOLER--LIGHTWEIGHT LEAVING LAS VEGAS

Date of Review:  Jan 24, 2004
The Bottom Line: Wayne Kramer's THE COOLER, featuring a tour de force performance by Alec Baldwin, is like an old school drama betrayed by sappy new school happy ending
Review: Wayne Kramer's THE COOLER seems predicated on a smorgasbord of Hollywood cliches. The first, concerning Sin City is that the thriving, gambling metropolis Bugsy Siegel envisioned is not glamorous at all, but inherently seedy and dangerous (Not true!...

Uncool is the "new" cool

Date of Review:  Jul 12, 2004
The Bottom Line: Biggest disappointment since "Lost in Translation". Macy is great but the material is lackluster and the last half-hour is painful viewing.
Review: Did they ever exist? Is the concept of "coolers" a clever invention of Hollywood? Are coolers about as real as Godzilla, the Blair Witch or a good Kevin Costner movie? Well if so, suspend disbelief for just a while.

Wayne Kramer's movie...

Who else but William H. Macy?

Date of Review:  May 3, 2004
The Bottom Line: A bravura performance from Macy, and a genuine delight.
Review: It isn't often that a single actor can carry an entire film, especially when much of the material is somewhat sordid in nature. Though Nicholas Cage received an Oscar for his excellent performance in "Leaving Las Vegas," the film was so...

Don't believe the previews, this is no comedy

Date of Review:  Dec 2, 2003
The Bottom Line: While it could have been better, The Cooler is a cut above most other movies that Hollywood churns out. Great performances from Bello, Baldwin and Macy.
Review: The Cooler is a fascinating movie about Las Vegas that's really more about life and having a positive mental attitude than anything else. Unfortunately, it hits home with that message way too hard in a story that's a lot darker than it appears from...

The Cooler takes too many chances

Date of Review:  Dec 21, 2007
The Bottom Line: has better luck than this movie.
Review: Choice is a very important element of cinema. There are movies that can make events happen out of nowhere but still be powerful because of how the characters' react. The Cooler's entire premise -- that Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy), a "cooler" who...
