Great Read

"The Color of Water," by James McBride is the true story of a black man who finds out about his mother's Jewish past. His mother is the daughter of a Rabbi. At a young age, she runs away from her home in Virginia and somehow ends up in Harlem, NY. That's where she meets two black parishiners, and has many children (13 in total), including the author. (I think 9 of the 13 go on to becoming physicians.) McBride, a journalist and professional musician, discusses his search for the truth about his mother's past, which was kept a secret for many years. He alternates chapters in his book between his mother's memoirs and his own wild past (including what it was like growing up in a house with so many kids), making for an interesting and thought-provoking read. It's truly a great read, and I would highly recommend it.
